Tschau Tschüssi is the best place to shop in town: shirts, bags, furniture and design junk, all made by young artists and designers. I found very cute shirts for my little niece, with the picture of a fairytale forest. A real treasure trove! Sometimes they host concerts or exhibitions.

This little communal cafe has a nice variety of non-alcoholic and alcoholic cocktails and a very alternative, lefty and studenty atmosphere; it doubles up as a little bit as a community centre, arthouse cinema, theatre and concert hall and event space.

The group associated with it also organises some of the best fun events of the city: the bathtub regatta, the soapbox derby, the naTo-cup (football), Bollywood in Leipzig and has also been caring for the restoration of the historic GDR advert 'Löffelfamilie'; which shows a family eating soup (donations urgently needed).

It's a fantastic little venue with cult status and as one of my favourite places only suitable for nice, friendly, open-minded, easy-going and in general just lovely people.

The south of Leipzig, a former opencast mining area, has been flooded over the last ten years and turned into a series of relaxing lakes. Cospudner is the first of these.
Hire a bike in the city, and cycle the 20 mins through the wonderful parks and forest to the lake, where you can take a dip in the water, and have lunch at the harbour, or even cycle the 10 km around the lake

A cafe, bar and restaurant tucked just 50 metres away from the maddening crowd and central city tourist mayhem. It’s a hangout for students, artists and writers... with a sprinkling of business people lunching together.

Read newspapers in any language, or work on your laptop. They have free WLAN, so it's deal for hanging out while working online, just surfing, or even reading the Guardian! The menu is good and reasonably priced. Breakfasts are excellent, however the coffee is the typical German barely-tolerable lukewarm stuff… try to think of it as something else and put up with it. Having said that, it’s still one of the city’s top (secret) locations.

It's between the end of Barfussgässchen (where all the tourists and village Germans go) and the main ring road. Walk towards the Stasi Museum (worth visiting!) and you´ll find Telegraph on the right.

Spend a lush day strolling around the network of parks just south-west of the city’s inner core. Beginning just behind the Neues Rathaus and sprawling out towards the leafy Plagwitz district, the Johanna Park and the Clara Zetkin Park (into which the Johanna merges) are filled with gardens, woodlands, lakes, Japanese-style bridges, inquisitive red squirrels, and eventually a full-blown river (Weisse Elster).

A semi-underground bar/cafe/venue/club with plenty going on from lunchtime until the early hours. It’s built from an old fortress on the south-east corner of the city centre. During Euro '96 the Leipzig Brits always watched the big screen TV there. Southgate broke our hearts...

A bar that's quite trendy-looking, with a good selection of well-priced cocktails and light meals. We went in there on a Saturday and there was a jazz band playing who were quite good.

German coffee is generally weak, tepid and bland, but this has the BEST coffee by a loooong shot (pun intended) in Leipzig. Coolest atmosphere, staff, music and in-crowd (who will kill me for telling you their secrets), top food and drinks and very reasonable prices. Warning - it opens at 6pm, but by 9pm it's standing room only. They will have a couple of big screens up during the World Cup for the fans.

The Gottschedstrasse is a street with lots of bars and clubs for various tastes. It’s between the city centre and the stadium, within easy walking distance from both. Try Luise (a pub), the more stylish Sol y Mar (a restaurant) or Night Fever (a disco-themed club).
