    Westbad Pool

Posted by rsolomon 28 September 2007

Public swimming pool complex at the Westbad tram stop. Just follow the scent of chlorine from the tram. Entrance was nine euro last time I visited.

Inside there's a water slide, a whirlpool, heated mineral bath, sauna and swimming lanes. Good place to take kids on a rainy holiday. Outside there are even more pools, plenty of grass to lay about and sometimes ducks come down to swim laps in the pools.

Address: Weinbergerstraße 11, Westend, Munich, 81241

Nearest Station: Westbad: Tram 19, Bus 72

    The Amalienburg

Posted by Disparate Dan 7 November 2006

The Electress Amalia’s hunting lodge has one large room, two smaller ones, a single day bed, a Delft-tiled kitchen, an indoor kennel for her dogs (who clearly lived in greater comfort than most of the population), one lavatory (not for use by visitors) and no fireplaces.

The domed central room has vast silver-gilt mirrors and crystal chandeliers, the walls painted the pale green-blue colour of infinity that you see when you stand between two parallel mirrors. On a winter day in the snow, it was cold, deserted and magical.

    Ostpark

Posted by gringalet 18 September 2006

Lovely park to go to when you're a bit sick of the often touristy Englischer Garten (however nice it is there too). Little lake in the middle, with a good restaurant and biergarten, where you can regularly catch a bit of live music, in the middle of that.

    Englischer Garten

Meander through this peaceful public park with its huge green spaces and shady trees to a fabulous beer garden where you can choose food and beverages from different booths: sausages, fish and chips and beers or if in recovery mode, tea and huge sugary doughnuts.

    Hirschgarten

    Posted by nenn0008 30 September 2005

The Hirschgarten is the largest outdoor beer garden in Bavaria. There are endless tables to enjoy a beer, as well as traditional Bavarian food. The cosy atmosphere under the leafy trees is complemented by the deer found in a large enclosure neighboring the beer garden. The park area is family friendly, with a playground and plenty of space to picnic.

    Waldfriedhof

Posted by elmerfudd 26 May 2006

The Waldfriedhof is a huge cemetery. However, it’s not the sort with row upon row of graves, but with lots of trees (wald-forest) and the graves in many little groups. Basically the whole thing is a great big park, with various parts, including a lake with incredibly fat fish lazing around in it.

Great place to step off the world for a few hours, take a good long walk or just flop on the grass. Bring some food and an umbrella (and a street map and compass wouldn’t hurt) as you can get lost and wander round for hours. Grave styles range from the kitschly pious (squirly Bavarian crosses with little roofs) to thoroughly modern and non-religious sculptures.

    Bus routes 54, 268 and 167 go around the outside;
Nearest u-bahn: Holzapfelkreuth (u6), then get a bus or walk along Fürstenrieder str. - the Friedhof starts at the crossroads with Wurmtalstr.
