Escape the big-city modernity of Stuttgart for a few hours and go to Tübingen, an idyllic so-beautiful-it-cannot-be-real university town, with well-preserved/restored medieval architecture. A much less cluttered version of Heidelberg, its castle is in a much better condition too.
 
For the romantically-minded, there is the Hölderlintürm, the last refuge for the
final 36 years of the mentally damaged poet Friedrich Hölderin, contemporary of the philosopher Georg Hegel.

But Germany means beer to so many of its visitors and Tübingen has many bars, cafes and weinstube to cater to your refreshment requirements.
