Greek getaway
ColvilleAnderson
Call me eccentric, but the idea of spending a holiday with hordes of English and Germans in a third country does not appeal. Leros is perfect as the bulk of tourists are Greeks and Italians. Northerners that make it here are usually older couples and families with small children.
Accesible from Kos by flying boat, Leros is relaxed and unimpressed. Fishing is the main trade on this unspoilt island in the Dodecanese. Italy occupied it in 1912 and later Mussolini's architects had their wicked way with the town of Lekki.
The main town of Agia Marina is mostly populated by Greeks and Italians and I recommend the little hilltop town of Platanos or the harbour town of Pandeli for an authentic experience. There are numerous beaches - mostly pebbled - but the water is gorgeous and a little moped will get you everywhere in a heartbeat. Great food, big, old castle on a hill, relaxed atmosphere. Go.
