If you want to stay in Mykonos for less than a week, the best option is to find a hotel in the town of Mykonos. Prices are most reasonable in June and late September. The hotel Pelican is a good option, just 10 minutes' walk from the centre.

Mykonos is the queen of entertainment. So, anyone who visits Mykonos should try at least once go to a really cool bar to dance till the first morning hours and drink some original cocktails.

I think that the bar El Pecado is an excellent choice. It is considered to be one of the hot spots of the island and a must-visit bar. We were sent there by a local when we asked him for a good place to drink nice liquor and dance like crazy!

We were very satisfied by what we saw. It has a medieval-style decoration, reminding of a church, with Argentinean and Spanish elements. There are also wall paintings representing Adam Eve. We stayed the first hours on the balcony, feeling the breeze of the Cycladic wind and looking the lights of the port. Then, when we felt ready for partying, we entered in the main clubbing area and danced mostly Latin music but also some popular mainstream songs.

“El Pecado” means “sin”, and you should know that it was not named like this at random. We left when the sun had already risen and I wish I had taken my sunglasses with me, because I definitely needed them when I got out of El Pecado…

I recommend to everyone visiting Mykonos and wants to feel a little –or, actually, a lot!– of its party spirit to go to El Pecado for an unforgettable, “sinful” night!

Mykonos oozes chic, but this cute and quirky guesthouse is an oasis of affordable, but comfortable, rooms amongst the boutique hotels and super-luxe villas.

Perched on a hillside, the guesthouse is located above the School of Fine Arts, and is solar-powered. So far, so Mykonos.

But inside it's a far less trendy affair, a jumble of cosy rooms with traditional whitewashed walls and splashes of bright decor.

With a pretty terraced garden, sweet sleepy cafe and rooms opening out to the sea, the location is peaceful but only a few steps into the town center.

The lovely owners will offer to pick you up from the airport, and you can hire bikes to explore the surrounding countryside.

Perfect for a laid back and romantic island escape.

Mykonos does have the reputation for being a party island but if you are looking for a serious bit of R&R, head to Ostraco Suites. Situated on a hilltop just above the hustle and bustle of Mykonos town, this is a fantastic place to stay. We were met at the airport by one of the staff and welcomed with an upgrade on arrival to a suite for a few nights which was heaven! Rooms are really luxurious and the breakfasts are served on the veranda - fresh fruit, home baked breads and so on - the list goes on. If you do feel like heading into the lively town centre, try Interni restaurant, an incredible setting tucked away in the old town and delicious food/cocktails. One other tip, Ostraco Suites will organise jeep hire for you - we hired one for a few days to explore the island and stumbled across beautiful Fokos beach, deserted with a huge stretch of white sand (just remember to take your own picnic/water etc as there are no bars or kiosks nearby, just one taverna on the beach only open from 1-7pm!)

If you stay in Mykonos, make a day trip to the island of Delos. According the Greek mythology the island was the birthplace of Artemis and Apollo.

Many historic temples, monuments and sites are here, such as the Lions Terrace with the famous statues of the lions, and the House of the Dolphins with amazing mosaics.

There are many ferries and high speed boats departing from Rafina to Mykonos daily. The journey is faster than taking the ferry from Piraeus.

Buses to Rafina from Athens depart at Pedion Areos at the junction of Patision and Alexandras avenue every half hour.

A little off the beaten track of lanes in the town but worth finding. Interesting and varied menu (especially compared to a lot of that on offer elsewhere in town) and very reasonably priced.

Staff delightful, very friendly and helpful. After your meal the bar is a fun relaxed place to continue an evening.

From the port follow Matoyianni street and where you see Nautica (restaurant) on the corner, turn left into the lane.

Visit Delos, the Sacred Island and the place where Apollo was born. Explore the biggest open-air archaeological monument in Europe. You will have a unique opportunity to see remains of temples, holy places, houses, and settlements ageing from the Neolithic to the Roman periods.

Mykonos's finest beach, for the views, quality of sand and the people: think transatlantic/European 20-, 30- and 40-somethings, style-conscious, but still relaxed. There are three coves, becoming more gay and secluded the further you go. Clamber over the rocks to the next beach and a stunning taverna where you can eat in a shady garden.

Elia is one of the most easterly beaches on the south coast. Takes about 20-30 minutes on a moped, and twice that long in the old fishing boats from Ornos;

Do you like Mykonos, but want to avoid the crowds? Try Agios Stefanos for somewhere a bit quieter than Mykonos town. It’s a small beach area about 4kms north of the main town with a selection of accommodation styles (from the Kastro Hotel to Mamas Pension), its own general store and some very good beachfront bars and restaurants.

A good way to spend some time is to walk from Ag Stefanos to Mykonos for a long lunch and then walk back to Ag Stefanos for dinner overlooking the beach

Catch a bus from the airport (we did) to your accommodation. Taxis are also available to get around the island.

Get some culture and go to this museum, situated close to Mykonos Town. It is very old and contains a lot of interesting artefacts from not only Mykonos, but all over the Cyclades group of islands. Some of the artefacts are relief carvings from the fall of Troy as well as the renowned black and red vases from the 5th century BC. When we visited in 2005 the admission was 2 euros for adults and free for children and students

Travel around the Greek Islands is usually by ferry or seajet (fast ferry) but if you are travelling to Mykonos from Athens you can avoid all the hassles of getting to the port of Athens and then taking the slow trip to Mykonos by flying. The train from central Athens goes to the airport (as do most hotel buses, along the new freeway), which avoids the problem of getting to the port. The flight from Athens is around 30mins on an Olympic Airways TurboProp plane. The fastest ferry takes much longer and is subject to weather conditions. Avoid the stress and the need for sea legs.
