Samothraki is one of the greenest Mediterranean islands and in ancient times the massive mountain that makes up its bulk was thought to be the Throne of Poseidon. While some well-preserved ruins may be found, the main attraction is the beauty of the island itself, and the annual neo-hippie Samothraki Dance Festival held on the pristine rock beaches. Refreshingly, this beautiful green island remains somewhat of an unknown to the public at large. There is little 'touristification', and none of the base venues that tend to pop up in popular tourist destinations. It is easily reachable by taking the Athens-Alexandropouli flight, and from there on by ferry.
