    Getting to Skiathos by ferry

    Posted by andy45 27 June 2009

    If you travel in Greece by car you can get to Skiathos from the port of Agios Konstantinos on the mainland. There are many daily departures.

    Banana Beach

    Posted by Sharkey 26 June 2009

    Super beach near final stop for Koukinares bus. Cross road from bus stop and follow dirt road up and over using banana beach signs to guide you.

    Beautiful water and sand with a couple of decent bar/cafe's. There is a nudie section up the far end if you want to get naked with all the other middle aged swingers. Expect to pay £8 parasol/lounger combi.

    Maria's

    Posted by Sharkey 26 June 2009

    Maria's walls are illustrated with characters from children's fairy tales. This kooky charm extends into the handwritten jotter style menu's.

    True to form the food is magical and if the characters could come to life they would surely follow cartoon wafts of delicious food all the way to your table. Pizza's are fantastic with a choice of mozzarella or feta cheese with more or less what ever else you want (the feta one is better). Feta stuffed garlic bread is the best I've ever had and jugs of house red and white are just as good as any of the overpriced bottles.

    All this takes place al fresco under the leafy protection of a beautiful Mulberry tree. There is limited seating inside.

    Only open at night. Expect to wait for a table at high season. A pizza and salad (both shared between two) + wine came to under €30. There is a great jeweller's/treasure trove next door where you can browse and chat to Harris(the owner) while you are waiting.

    Koutsouri Beach on Cape Kalamaki

    Posted by zatroni 31 March 2009

    This is a little beach which can only be reached down a steep, perhaps impossible slope or by boat.
    But it is perfect, one little taverna which washes its fresh fish in the sea. A beach with the purest sand and if you are lucky the most beautiful marble pebbles.
    So it is for swimming, lazing and off course eating.
    Need I say more ...

    Take the only island bus, you will know what I mean when you get to Skiathos. Get off at stop 13 and follow the road round the Cape to the furthest point which is about half a kilometre then down the cliff to the beach. Don't worry I have seen the most beautiful legs tricking down in flip flops.
    Enjoy

    Skiathos beaches

    Posted by janet23 8 July 2007

    One of the best beaches on Skiathos is Koukounaries but the island has many other beaches to enjoy swimming and sunbathing like Asellinos beach, Banana beach, Kechria and Vromolimnos.

    The beaches of Agia Paraskevi and Troulos are ideal for families.

    Windmill Restaurant

    Posted by HipHopDwarf 9 July 2006

    Book the honeymoon balcony! It’s perched high up the mill itself. I had a great view of the sunset framing my wife's hair. Good "Euro" food, but almost triple the price of other tavernas.

    Do not climb the steps if you have a heart problem, talk in the bar beforehand was of a customer who had a heart attack after the climb up.

    Look up to find it. tel: (+30) 2427 024550

    Escape to Skopelos and beyond

    Posted by snakey 14 June 2006

    The much overlooked islands in the northern Sporades are like stepping stones leading out into the azure waters of the Aegean National Marine Park, each one less inhabited than the other.

    The largest island, Skiathos, hosts the only airport and once landed you should quickly make your way to the more beautiful and less touristy, Skopelos. Once there I would recommend making the exhausting climb through Skopelos Town to "Anatoli" restaurant where the views are breathtaking and the food is sumptuous - all accompanied by traditional rembetika music.

    If possible travel by boat to the other islands; the sleepy Greek island of Alonissos with it's crystalline waters and hidden coves; the tranquil monastery at Kyra Panagia inhabited only by monks and male donkeys and the flat volcanic island of Psathoura hiding the underwater ruins of a lost city.

    Fly direct to Skiathos and take one of the daily Flying Dolphin boats or a high-speed catamaran to the islands of Skopelos or Alonissos. Alternatively, hydrofoils go directly to the islands from either Athens or Thessaloniki;

    Jail House

    Posted by Maverick78 13 June 2006

    Visited in 1999 and it was by far the best restaurant on the Island. Situated in the Old Port, it's a little bit more expensive, but then it's not your average greek grub. Well worth a visit.

    Booked through Expedia, and all seemed to be going fine until we got to the airport and our flight times had been changed without telling us. They also did not appear to have told the rather listless customer service agent at their designated desk.

    Numerous emails asking for an explanation have gone unanswered, though they have been read. They did answer the first one saying they would take 28 days to explain... they didnt.

    Amfliki is near the Health Centre, stunning views and great food, followed on by homemade cherry brandy!

    Asprolithos is at the top end of Papadiamante Street, right turn after the cobbles. Not a good view but free ouzo to start with and a free sweet. We had 2 courses each plus wine, about £25. Nice toilets too.

    Amfiliki is opposite the Health Centre; tel: (+30) 2427 022 839;
    Nearest bus stop: no. 4, Acropolis;
