    Liszt Ferenc Ter

Posted by jellihead 11 February 2013

Menza is my recommendation around the Liszt Ferenc area, great Hungarian food at very reasonable prices. Then get along to one of the many cafe’s or pastry houses and eat the best croissants in the world filled with the most delicious apple, curd cheese or walnut, or combinations of a couple, with a good coffee and a swig of Palinka, the national drink.

A hidden gem where you can lose a couple of hours exploring rooms crammed full of art nouveau treasures, followed by the chance to enjoy the finest Hungarian coffee and cake among the collection. You can even buy the displays, if you can fit them in your suitcase!

    Central Cafe

Posted by troutiemcfish 3 February 2013

I love the faded splendour of the Central Cafe in Budapest. Sat on worn red leather seats in the wood-panelled interior it is easy to imagine eavesdropping on the earnest conversations of bearded revolutionaries, artists, poets and lovers.
Art deco lights hang from from starburst ceiling roses, and the doors open up onto the street to entice passers-by into the cool, high-ceilinged rooms with their beautiful painted mouldings and dark wood floors.
The waiters act slightly aloof, as though they carry the weight of history around with their trays of magnificent cakes and hearty Hungarian breakfasts. We feasted on scrambled eggs, Mangalica sausage, soft cheese on brown seeded bread and freshly squeezed orange juice.

    The Budapest Great Market Hall

Posted by Sipi 14 February 2011

The Great Market Hall is centrally located and the largest market in the central Budapest area, on the Pest side of the Liberty Bridge. The building is of beautiful neo-Gothic construction with intricate, heavily-decorated roof tiling.

The market is a three-storey structure, supported with slender metal columns. Even today the market is used by the people of the city for daily necessities such as vegetables, meat and fish. It is also a tourist mecca with lots of traditional salami and paprika on sale. The basement holds a supermarket for convenience shopping.

The sights and smells of this market are unforgettable, but it's setting is the cherry on the cake.

    Klassz

Klassz is both a wine store and a restaurant. Very good food and reasonably priced; a great atmosphere and unusual decor. Excellently located on the stylish Andrassy ut.

    New York cafe

Posted by Fidge 8 July 2008

Wonderfully ornate cafe which captures the opulence and splendour of early 20th century Budapest.
Now part of a five-star hotel and not cheap but certainly worth a visit.

    Fatal Restaurant

Posted by GavinCollins 3 June 2008

Fatal actually means wooden plate in Hungarian but the portions may well prove life-threatening.

Located in Pest off the Vaci Utca, the restaurant is easy to find, cheap and offers huge traditional meals, mostly cooked and served in the dish dish, atop of a wooden plate.

I had the pork knuckle and only got halfway - highly recommended but book in advance if you're going in the evening.

    fascinating website

Posted by KrissyS 26 March 2008

This website is about the real Budapest, and gives very interesting background details about the history, culture and architecture of this beautiful capital which is slowly losing some of its unique features (old presszo bars, neon signs, dingy borozos) as it changes into a modern European metropolis. Written by a Hungarian speaker, the articles featured go behind the facade and into much more detail than a guide book could manage.
It has a wealth of information for people who really love Budapest and want to know the city better.
Check out the recent story on the Trabants - really interesting!

    Menza

Posted by Minesamojito 12 December 2007

Great restaurant in a good location, not far from Octagon. Food is fantastic, atmosphere great. Two people, two courses, best bottle of wine on the menu; £45 - bargain. It's full of locals too - a good indication.

    Four Seasons Hotel

Posted by asbb 26 March 2007

The European flagship of the Four Seasons chain. Recently renovated to its glorious, Art Nouveau best.

Stunning all the way I'm sure, but I've only been in for tea, as I'm a poor student and not a millionaire, like you. I ate in the bar area, which is beautiful, and the food was good and the service impeccable.

Wish I could afford to stay there. Donations on a post card to...

    Goa

Posted by deliawinkle 14 April 2006

An asian/italian/fusion restaurant where I ate possibly the best chocolate cake of my life : chocolate lava cake. The decor is amazing, music just right, and is the type of place that if it opened in Bucharest would be heart-breakingly expensive, but it's in Budapest so it's not.

    Avoid eating near the baths

Posted by Biggo 10 February 2006

You must not under any circumstances pick up a quick bite to eat at the snack shack in the park near the baths. It is without doubt the worst food I have ever tasted (if only briefly).
