Sunday night is a good time to walk along the beach. A lot of local families etc. go every week before sunset.

Alibag is a beach which is as clean and Indian as anyone could possibly want. Good food, safe swimming, as long as you don't go very far out, and about a two hour drive from the hell-hole that is Mumbai. The drive will be the scariest toboggan ride ever, but worth the effort.

A hire car or taxi will charge in the region of five hundred rupees for the journey. Go through Vashi/Panvel/to Alibag.
