Keep kids and adults engaged by visiting the fascinating turtle sanctuary based on the beautiful south coast of Sardinia. As well as the rescued sea turtles and aquarium the nearby Roman ruins and beautiful beach with perfectly situated Sant'Efisio church will easily fill a day out. Best of all, we managed this trip, which was one of the highlights of our stay on the island, by public transport from Cagliari.

La Cantina is a great place for a snack. On a side street off Via Roma.
You can sit in or take way.
Via dei Mille off Via Roma.
Just around corner from 59 Via Roma in side street.
'Trendy' bar on Bastione San Remy in the elevated Castello area of Cagliari.
Outdoor drinking/eating (which becomes a nightclub later in the night) with fantastic views over all of Cagliari.
We had cocktails which cost about £7 a head.
Bastione San Remy. You have to walk up 100 or so steps to get to this area.
However there are three free outdoor lifts up to the Castello area from Santa Croce and two lifts from Viale Regina Elena.
Absolutely superb ice cream from this place - it is Italy after all!
So many different flavours to choose from you'll find yourself going back again and again and again.
No. 35 Piazza Yenne at the right hand side as you come up the hill from Via Roma.
Great beach only 10 minutes by bus from the centre of Cagliari.
Beach does get packed on Sundays but even then we were able to hire sun loungers and umbrellas.
Beach is five miles long so if you want it less packed you just have to walk a little bit.
There are cafes/bars surrounding the beach area so you'll want for nothing here.
Seen as one of best city beaches in the Med.
We got off at first stop at beach (Gorgona).
Yellow bus PQ or PF from Piazza Matteotti at west end of Via Roma on waterfront.
Buses go very regularly to / from beach with fares at €1 each way. Tickets can be bought from a kiosk at bus station or from most newsagent kiosks.
Very nice and satisfying trattoria in the heart of Cagliari. Judging by the crowds queuing later on in the evening, it's a very popular venue as well.
We sat outside eating and drinking, watching the people pass up and down the street.
Wine was cracking value - €5 for a litre of very drinkable table wine.
Via Sardegna 60 (parallel to Via Roma)
Very nice restaurant and wine bar in the centre of Cagliari. It also has outdoor seating.

Well worth seeing. According to the guide she said this was the third best preserved amphitheatre (built between 1st & 2nd century AD) in Italy after Rome and Verona.
The tour of underground chambers under amphitheatre was worth it - also used as an air raid shelter in 1943. In summers it is used as a concert venue.
Off Viale Buoncammino near botanic gardens.
Very near city centre. From Piazza Yenne, turn left into Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, then take a right into Via Sant Ignazio Da Laconi.
Walk up the hill along Via Sant Ignazio Da Laconi and go past botanic gardens. Entrance is on the right.

It's a luxury guesthouse in Sardinia. I was there last summer and it's an astonishing, stunning place. By sunset when the lighthouse is lit up it feels like magic.

Newly opened by an extremely friendly mother and son team, is one of the finest gelaterie in Sardinia, if not all Italy. A large range of flavours are available and reasonable prices, and unlike many ice cream parlours, you really can taste the ingredients in every flavour, from fresh fruit to rich dark chocolate and Italian coffee.
Its location on a pretty little square in the heart of Cagliari only adds to its appeal, with various spots to perch and enjoy your gelato right outside.
Piazzetta Savoia, Marina, Cagliari - just 2 minutes walk from the main Largo Carlo Felice and Piazza Yenne
