Over 65's concessions for EU citizens. All national museums are free entry on production of proof of age. This made it unnecessary to get a Roma Pass which is the most publicised tourist reduction. Sites include the Forum, Palatine and Colosseum also the Villas Adriana and d'Este at Tivoli. The wonderful Villa Borghese has free entry but must be pre-booked so do it when you are in Rome. If you do it before leaving the U.K. use their own on-line site, not a commercial ticket site, as the booking fee is much less.
We found this hotel in Rome's center, amazing price and friendly staff, we were satisfied. An excellent quality price hotel. Basic but very clean double room. Perfect location for the public transportation.

The best Pizza restaurant in Rome. Without doubt. When I first saw the entrance to this place I wondered why eight people were already waiting outside before it opened. It looks nothing from the outside, although parts of Trastevere are very pretty. Rather than the touristy places to eat in Rome here you get a real taste for Italian food (pizza mainly) at its finest. It's totally Italian, no English on the menu. Take a few minutes to see what others are odering, the staff are friendly so don't feel embarrassed to point and say you would like the same! It's tiny, full of character and if you are really lucky a cello player will sing and play to you. One of the best moments in Rome I have ever had.

One of the best hostels I stayed in in Italy - the staff are super friendly and there's loads going on - a cheap bar, free pizza parties and a great breakfast!
Housed in an apartment building close to Termini station, the rooms are huge and the hostel has discount deals with restaurants and the laundrette nearby!
Nicolas Inn is a b&b near the Roman Forum. We highly recommend staying here because of the excellent location, friendly service and comfortable rooms. It is run by an Italian and American couple that do a superb job of helping their guests enjoy their stay. I will post other recommendations for restaurants that they passed on to us.
Last week I've been in Rome for 1 week with my family and I've booked with a last minute deal a large apartment near Spanish Steps . The price was very convenient and the apartment was wery appointed and equpped . Justly, one of the world's most popular tourist destinations, with its endlessly rich heritage of art, architecture and archaeology, not to mention fantastic food and wine, Rome is a city that everyone wants to visit. It has a massive range of accommodation for all pockets, and if you're on a tight budget, you could do far worse than the Hostel des Artistes.
Less than a 10-minute walk from the city centre's main arrival point, the Termini station, Hostel des Artistes is located in an old apartment building on a quiet backstreet. It isn't luxury, but it is extremely cheap, and for your money you get security, good standards of cleanliness, impressively large bathrooms, and a lovely roof terrace.
It may not be in the Centro Storico but its transport connections are fantastic - you can get to almost anywhere in the Eternal city easily by bus or metro from the nearby Termini. There are also a handful of cheap eateries and minimarkets nearby for bargain breakfasts, pastries, or to make a packed lunch.

Metro: Castro Pretorio is right around the corner, or Termini is less than ten minutes walk. From the Termini, buses connect to the heart of the city, and trains to the airport and the rest of the country.
After staying in a fabulous place in Florence (see our other tip about Il Ghiro) we thought it couldn't get any better. How wrong we were. The Beehive is extraordinary. A beautiful, warm, clean, friendly hostel with free internet and the most incredible vegetarian cafe downstairs (you can also eat at the cafe if you are not a guest). We can't believe our luck and we are wishing we could stay in a place like this everywhere we go. By far, the best hostel possible. The term "hostel" doesn't remotely do it justice. It's home, in Rome.

The Italian capital has always been particularly famous for being an expensive city, but if you like Italian culture then you can enjoy the best that Rome has to offer for next to nothing. The city houses countless churches (the Piazza Santa Maria), monuments and galleries (Piazza dell'Accademia di San Luca) that are available to visit for free, and if you feel you have exhausted those, then step just outside the city center and take a relaxing walk through the luscious greens of the Villa Ada.

If you want to visit Rome and indulge in superb accommodation for the price of a hostel, then you should certainly stay at the Auditorium Di Mecenate. A modern hotel that has fantastic styling in both its bedrooms and bathrooms, you almost feel like the owners have misunderstood the exchange rate and will come bounding into your room asking for more money.
The private bedrooms have elegant high ceilings and long glass windows and drapes and the bathrooms are decked out in very modern black tiles and white units. The staff are always very helpful and the location is convenient, being close enough to the city center and just around the corner from the main train station. It’s a brilliant place to stay when trying to save money on your trip.

Just an excellent hotel and staff. Great location and proximity to rail station. Lots of restaurants close by. Very clean. 2 mins walk to Metro. Its location near to the termini proved to be very handy as we got a train from the airport. Would definitely recommend and would not hesitate to return. Good value and highly recommended.

We had a brilliant holiday at Nicolas Inn in Rome. Lovely rooms and the staff was very warm. The location is ideal, just a few minutes from the Coliseum.
They gave us priceless information on how to avoid the queues - go to the Vatican Museum in the afternoon. Every piece of research stated that we needed to arrive early or wait in line. We took the advice and went to the basilica first and arrived at the museum at 1.30pm. We walked in without a queue. Brilliant! To think we almost avoided the Sistine Chapel due to the horrible queues.
Reality was nicer than pictures. Really quiet hotel (rooms 1,2), which is not so usual in Rome. Lots of restaurants outside. We found the Hotel Felice to be very conveniently located between the termini and the metro stops. The staff, particularly Mario (at the desk) were friendly and helpful. Great staff and location.

I had always wanted to visit Rome (all that wonderful history and art to see), but was on a budget and didn't think I could afford a decent hotel.
Some time spent scouring Google came up with Italy Accom - a Rome-based firm who rent out apartments, villas and farmhouses across Italy for holiday tourists.
The owners (Jill & Leon) are Australian/English and they were wonderful with the help they provided me and my partner in finding a lovely place to stay for our two weeks in Roma!
We got a lovely studio apartment located on Via Vittoria. This is one of Rome's best streets, with lots of lovely cafes, bars and shops nearby.
The equivalent in a hotel room in this area was at least 60 Euros a night more expensive, plus we got privacy AND space to stretch out.
Being able to cook your own meal with fabulous fresh ingredients from the local market was a delight! It tastes a whole lot better than the "stuff" from Italian restaurants back home.
Thanks Jill and Leon for your help. We had a wonderful time in Rome, in no small part due to your great service (and the lovely studio Vittoria we stayed in).
Rome is the experience of a lifetime! But, we'll be back - one visit is just not enough.
Pizzas are a speciality but the menu is great. Rossopomodoro is a chain (Maybe think Pizza Express?) around Italy. This one is in Largo di Torre Argentina, west of Piazza Venezia and three blocks south of the Pantheon. Go upstairs after entering the Tardis-like front door to a large, frantically busy local gem.

If Hotel Lodi can't quite make up its mind if it's a good budget hotel (with nice airy private rooms upstairs) or a pretty upmarket hostel (dorm rooms downstairs), one thing's for sure: it's a fantastic option for cheap accommodation in Rome!
It's set a couple of stops on the metro away from the city centre, in a smart suburb near a couple of excellent (and well priced) restaurants. Out back there's a lovely garden (with fruit trees and vines), perfect for lounging around in on warm summer evenings...
But what really makes it special is the people who run it. Fabrizio is a giant of a man, who literally pressgangs his guests into sharing his food and wine (or grappa), and insists on giving them detailed instructions for how to get the best out of his beloved city. Special guy, special place.

Not a pub, but a bed & breakfast near the Colosseum. The rooms are beautiful, as lovely as we have seen in four-star hotels. The host couple is very kind. They helped us plan our time and suggested some great restaurants.

The hotel is in a residential area about 10min walk from Termini. The room and bathroom are small but clean and new. It is generally quiet at night, except for the hostelry and pizzeria close to the hotel. Very nice employees, helpful and smiling. Only problem we had was with the elevator... there wasn't an elevator!!! Within walking distance of Stazione Termini. I would definitely stay there again.

I am so so glad that we decided to stick to La Casa di Asa instead of somewhere closer to the centre of Rome.
It takes about 30 minutes to travel from the doorstep of La Casa to the closest metro station, but it's very very easy to do so.
The people there are lovely, the rooms are cleaned daily, there is air conditioning, the breakfasts are filling but very simple.
It's just a really nice place to stay and not too expensive. I would thoroughly recommend this place for anyone who is staying in Rome for more than three days, just because it's nice to be able to leave the city behind and be around true Romans instead of just tourists.
Basically, the rooms are fine, not fantastically great or anything, but very clean and serviecable.
It's the neighborhood that really makes La Casa di Asa worth the stay.
