Italy
Rome’s rice croquette. Originally conceived as a way to use up leftovers, it consists of a mixture of rice, mozzarella and tomato paste in a crust of deep-fried breadcrumbs. More often found in bars and snack bars than in restaurants. Hard to stop at just one.
When visiting the Vatican on Sunday you will find the queues for the Basilica and the Dome evaporate at 12 o’clock when the Pope starts his address. This is the time to join the queue. You move quickly through security and you will find yourself below the Pope’s window. You have a great view through the gaps between the columns. You are now ahead of the crowds with the Basilica and the Dome to yourself, plus a very different photograph for your album.
A bit naughty but thrilling nonetheless. At night you can crawl under the steel fence that surrounds the Colosseum. I was shown this by a couple of expats we met whilst interrailling. We went at 2am. You can climb all over the ruins and access sections that are noramlly sheilded during the day. Try watching Gladiator a few days before and let your imagination run wild!
