Break for the border
Trieste used to be Austria's seaport. It boomed as a centre of shipping and insurance from the time of Maria Theresia onwards, hence the imposing waterfront architecture. It's part of Italy now but has a strong local identity and as well as the Austrian past, it has strong links to Slovenia (which it is alomost surrounded by).

Great coffee houses, elegant streets, hills with views and lots of poky little specialist shops due to the fact that it hasn't been bulldozed by all the usual chain stores.
