Happy hour between 5 and 7.30pm makes the delicious cocktails very affordable.

This was actually recommended to me by another traveler and the fact that I'm passing on the tip says it all!

There may be tourists here but they are mostly backpackers and young people, giving the bar a fun international flavor.

The owners are super-friendly too and seem genuinely interested in their visitors, particularly those from elsewhere in Europe so be prepared to engage in some lively conversation!

The atmosphere is that of a private party - you can spill out on to the street or eat at little drop-down ledges, built into the walls of the shop.

A great alternative to an expensive and indifferent meal in a tourist restaurant.

Original art deco with waiters and martinis to match the glasses and olives. If you want to arrange to meet someone in Venice do it in style and do it here in Harry’s Bar, but be prepared to pay for it.

And it’s easy to find: just around the corner from the Bridge of Sighs where, according to Byron, prisoners gazed their last on freedom as they crossed the bridge from the Courts of the Doge’s Palace to their cells.

Tucked away in a back street near the Fondamente Nove is the best pasticceria in Venice, and one of the most mouth-watering window displays I've ever seen. Chestnuts dipped in chocolate, 'budini' (little rice and egg custard cakes), castagnaccio (chestnut cake), all kinds of chocolate sweets, and at reasonable prices. The owner, Roberto Puppa, tries to create the most authentic, traditional Venetian recipes - ask for advice and recipes. And you can get a cup of coffee, too.

There's some great bars - Cafe Rosso, Duchamp, and the Orange bar on the square itself, and Cafe Noir and Cafe Blu just round the corner, the latter which has great live music. With the magic combination of its house set (influenced by everything from acid to electronica to deep from minimal to techhouse), open air location and spectacular Venetian sunsets, The Better Days has grown to become the most important, unforgettable beach party in all of Venice. Guests of the party often make comparisons to the bliss and ambience found at the famous Circo Loco parties held in Ibiza, or to those of Cavo Paradiso in Mykonos. Unforgettable.
