On the banks of the Adige
A mixture of Roman, medieval, and Venetian buildings, close to the magical River Adige. Many places to see, including Juliet's supposed tomb and the mythical setting for the famous balcony scene. There is little traffic in the city centre, and many festivals take place each year, including the opera festival and a drama season at the well-preserved Roman theatre on the banks of the Adige.

Be careful that the travel agents do not sell you packages in hotels outside the city (see the report on Giardino Giusti in the Guardian). Also some famous restaurants are not patronised by the Veronese! I recommend the Hotel Europa close to the amphitheatre, and the Mescola restaurant.

Hotels often give good rates out of season, and three-star hotels are often cheaper than two-star hotels, a little known fact!
