Nationals from most European countries, Australia and North America are usually issued a three-month tourist visa on each entry to Japan. Nationals from other countries will have to get a visa in advance to visit Japan.
According to Japanese law, foreign tourists must carry their passports with them at all times.

I highly recommend an easy tram ride to Glover Garden where the view over Nagasaki Bay is superb.

I strolled up there early one fresh January morning and had the place practically to myself - a feat in itself considering Japan's human abundance. One can enjoy a peaceful and uninterrupted view in the pleasant surroundings of this colonial garden. I was not surprised to hear that Nagasaki Bay at night rates in the top three of Japan's most romantic views.

There are also many other places of interest in Nagasaki. No visit there would be complete without a trip to the world-famous Peace Park or U-Bomb Museum close by. It is a sobering yet enlightening experience to see the fresh beauty and growth of a place that was all but obliterated a mere sixty years ago. The message of Nagasaki is hope.

At Nagasaki bus and train station, there is a very helpful tourist information desk that provides detailed maps highlighting places of interest. A discounted day pass for Nagasaki's tram can also be purchased here. There is a tram stop right opposite the station and Glover Garden is a pleasant 15 minute ride away

Well, Kyushu isn't for sure.

I'm British and find Japan generally cheaper than Britain.

For example:

Average meal = 1,000yen or less (5 pounds) - it's very easy to find good simple food for 600 yen.

Average drink price = 500 - 600 yen (2.50 - 3 pounds)

Hotel prices = cheap 3,500 / average business hotel 5,500

Clothes and other stuff seems much cheaper than Britain.

Transport - shinkansen pricey but other trains much cheaper than Britain.

Fruit and veg can be bizarrely expensive, but depends on where you shop.

Maybe central Tokyo is pricy, but everywhere else is as above.

Along the main road (route 202) outside the main Nagasaki station there are many raesonably priced clean and efficient business hotels. (between 5,000 & 6,000 yen for a single). There's the Belleview Hotel which i have stayed in - clean cheap central (3 people shared a room at 4,000 each) - good sized beds and rooms (by Japanese standards). Highly recommended.

Take the tram two stops to Dejima.

The festival of Obon (August 9) is a fabulous time with firecrackers, processions and lanterns - and particularly poignant since the A-bomb was dropped on the same date.

To cap it all, do as we did and arrive early evening at the railway station to be greeted by the tannoyed 'Madam Butterfly'. Fabulous people, fabulous place.

It connects most must-see places of interest: the atomic bomb museum and peace park, the main railway terminus, the waterfront and Dejima museum. At the waterfront there are many different restaurants and cafes. This is a good place to meet with the locals and share some Japanese whisky.
