dADa is a restaurant decorated in the style of Dadaism. It's whacky yet stylish. The food is a bit like Mongolian Barbecue: you fill up a bowl with fresh meat and vegetables and it's cooked for you and brought to your table in no time. And it tastes wonderful!
dADa also has a wonderful selection of drinks. A good place to go before a night on the town and then return the next day to cure the hangover!
I absolutely love this place.

Certainly the best restaurant in Riga by far, where all the 'important' visitors eat (Prince Charles, Elton John etc!
Not cheap by Latvian standards but brilliant food and service. Great lunchtime menu as well.
19 Elizabetes iela - about 10 minutes walk from the Freedom Monument.

The combination of an eye-catching wine list, friendly service and great food makes this place your home away from home in Riga.
As you walk through the glass entrance that provides the only natural light to the restaurant, you enter a warm world of wood, stone and glass. The potential unfriendliness of bare brick and rough plastered walls is successfully offset by exposed wooden beams, ventilation running through polished wooden conduits, and locally hand crafted stained glass lampshades.
A carved wooden partition separates the smoking and non-smoking areas and provides some intimacy for those who end up with tables in the center of the restaurant. The overall effect is of a warm and comfortable environment.
10, Aldaru Street. The restaurant is located in the very heart of Vecriga (Old Riga) in the medieval warehouse building next to the only remaining bit of the city wall and one of the main tourist attractions - Swedish Gates.
This is a fantastic cavernous place with flickering candles, earthenware pots and waiters in medieval costume. It could be tacky but it's not as it's set in a authentic 13th century cellar down a narrow alley in the old town.
The menu does not include anything not around in medieval times, which means you get the interesting choice of pheasant soup and rabbit stew among other culinary delights of a bygone age.
It's expensive by Riga standards, but still good value for the experience you get. Especially if you're there on a night when the aforementioned dressed-up staff give impromptu live music performances.
Superb, coffee house, come bar, come restaurant. It reminds you of a smaller version of the municipal house cafe in Prague. The decoration is opulent and the place is very sophisticated. If you can get a seat in the window it's a great place to people watch, whilst relaxing over a coffee and Jack Daniels as it looks out over the Livu Laukums square, which in winter has an outdoor ice rink, which adds to the ambience.

Riga has lots of really excellent restaurants but they get very busy on a Saturday night. So book in advance. Perhaps because Latvian is such a hard language, most people speak some English. One really good place is Melnie Muki in Jana seta - one of the most detailed menus I've seen.
Melnie Muki is in Jana Seta ("seta" means street) which is in the old town. It looks a bit like a Swiss chalet from the outside.
