You get a great view of Riga from the 26th floor of the Radisson Blu Hotel Skyline bar in the city centre – there are beautiful sunsets you can enjoy together with your friends with a glass of your favorite drink there! Radisson Blue Hotel you will easily see walking just some three minutes from the Freedom Monument to the historical centre (away from the Old Town). The bar opens at 3 - 4PM, but you can't always get the table near the window and you can't reserve. But you can go there and walk around enjoying the sights, and you can do it for free. The best thing is that from this place you can enjoy the lights of Riga at night. If there are any free tables on the left side of the room – you are lucky, the view from there is the best. They have also panoramic elevators (and the view from the toilets is worth seeing).

In fact, it was quite the opposite with a VIP entrance to a club, reserved seats, champagne and top tunes all through the night.

A relatively tourist-free little cafe by day, it turns into a hipster hangout by night, complete with great indie music, awesome barstaff, and pretty much just cool, laid back Riga kids. I definitely recommend it, but only if you don't act like a tourist when you visit - that would totally ruin what an awesome place it is!

Not one for culture as high brow as this, my visit to the opera house was more than a little hesitant. However, it's great. Particularly for opera virgins. Most Sundays they put on a famous show with ballets like the Nutcracker and Swan Lake commonplace. For a tenner you get seats down the front of this incredibly ornate building. Be warned, however, the people around you are likely to be far better dressed than you are.

On the 26th floor of what must be the tallest hotel in the centre of Riga is a bar where the beautiful people hang out. The Skyline bar gives you a great view out over the old town – and also of the city's best looking residents dressed to impress.

When there is snow outside, which appears to be most of the year, it makes for a great backdrop to a few cocktails. Beware though, the hotel was planning to renovate the place this winter, so it might be a fruitless ride up the outside glass lift until April.

This is a fantastic cavernous place with flickering candles, earthenware pots and waiters in medieval costume. It could be tacky but it's not as it's set in a authentic 13th century cellar down a narrow alley in the old town.

The menu does not include anything not around in medieval times, which means you get the interesting choice of pheasant soup and rabbit stew among other culinary delights of a bygone age.

It's expensive by Riga standards, but still good value for the experience you get. Especially if you're there on a night when the aforementioned dressed-up staff give impromptu live music performances.

Superb, coffee house, come bar, come restaurant. It reminds you of a smaller version of the municipal house cafe in Prague. The decoration is opulent and the place is very sophisticated. If you can get a seat in the window it's a great place to people watch, whilst relaxing over a coffee and Jack Daniels as it looks out over the Livu Laukums square, which in winter has an outdoor ice rink, which adds to the ambience.
