Vilnius, the capital city, is a jewel with a large number of baroque churches dating from the counter-reformation. The city centre, the largest in Europe, is a World Heritage Site.
There is a wide range of food available - the local speciality is the Zeppelin, an incredibly filling outsize stuffed dumpling. There is a wide range of hotels - reception staff speak English. English is widely spoken by the younger generation, but the taxi drivers only seem to speak Lithuanian or Russian.
A short journey away is Trakai, with its restored castle. A four-and-a-half hour express bus journey takes you to Palanga, a fairly up-market resort on the Baltic coast.
Along the coast is Klaipeda giving access to the Curonian Spit, a world heritage site. Book budget flights to Vilnius with Air Baltic. Prices are cheap for us at the moment. The currency unit is the Litas (about five to the pound) which is pegged to the euro. Thoroughly recommended for a short break.
