Somewhere for the weekend

A placid summer escape in the eastern corner of Macedonia, Berovo is known for its tranquil lake and pine forests. Narrow curved-roof houses evoke images of Swiss chalets in this little town that hails back to the 17th century. The area is beautiful in autumn, when the leaves turn, and good cross-country skiing can be enjoyed in winter. Berovo is a popular weekend getaway for Macedonia’s urbanites, and tourism comprises what little economy it has. The centre of the town comprises one long street, where a handful of cafes, restaurants and faded old shops are located, rusty old Yugos and Zastavas parked on the curb. A small museum contains archaeological finds from the region. The 19th century Monastery of St Michael the Archangel, located on the town’s northern edge, is another local site of interest. But mostly Berovo is a destination for those looking for peace and tranquility amidst deciduous and pine forests where, according to local legends, wolves still roam. Berovo is aroundthree hours by bus from Skopje, and also connects the eastern towns of Strumica to the south and Delcevo to the north on a stunningly scenic and winding mountain road.
