Penang, a large island just off the north-west tip of peninsular Malaysia, is an enticing mix of eastern and western culture. The capital, Georgetown (commonly referred to also as Penang), was formerly a British colonial outpost, and has a richness of diversity not found in many other parts ofsouth-e ast Asia, including Chinese, Indian, Malay and British influence. As such, the food is excellent and varied (there is even a man who wanders the streets of Chinatown with a burrito wagon in tow) and the architecture generally stunning, if a bit dilapidated.
The rest of the island hosts fine beaches, a seemingly out of place but lovely funicular railway, and the Snake Temple, where, for a small fee, you can be photographed with serpents on your head.
A superb port of call for anyone needing a break on the overland route through south-east Asia, or simply an excellent holiday spot.
