Beautiful riverside lodge in a spectacular jungle location. You can dine under the stars beside the river and set off early in the morning to track orangutans in the wild. Amazing place.

This is a lovely retreat high above the town of Sandakan, on Sabah's east coast. A real throwback to colonial days, it has gazebos on the lawn (which incorporates a croquet pitch) and great scones and tea served as you take in the picturesque bay. A wonderful setting, and well worth the hot walk up the steps from the town to get there.
Uncle Tan's is a very basic camp located in the heart of the rainforest near Sandakan. It can be quite tough - squat toilets, lots and lots of mosquitos and mud, long walks through jungle - but the chance to see the wildlife is unbeatable. I saw a dominant male orangutan from about 5m away, plus a reticulated snake, tarantula, scorpion, lots of proboscis monkeys, bearded pigs, hornbills etc. Fantastic place with brilliant fun staff and a lovely communual atmosphere.
On the main road to Semporna, a few miles outside Sandakan (quite near airport) - any bus will drop you off if you tell them where you're going. Make sure you get cash out first though, as there are no ATMs for miles.

What a fantastic way to spend an evening; eating fish and chips along with mushy peas, bread and butter and English tea. Perched on a hill overlooking the bay watching a lightening show on the horizon whilst playing croquet.
