    DF Metro system

Posted by urbanalebrije 7 March 2006

I've lived here for four years as a foreigner and never even seen a robbery or any kind of unpleasantness on the metro. For 2 pesos (not 10) i.e. about 12 pence to get anywhere, often faster than by road, it's unbeatable: safe and clean, (even if a bit old and ropey). Also one of the best places to watch and learn about life here.

    Avoid the Metro

Posted by RogerDunne 6 March 2006

Here's a useful tip for those hoping to cut transport costs: avoid Mexico City's metro like the plague - unless you hide your money etc somewhere in your shoes. It's just not worth it. The metro is often overcrowded and overrun by well-organised gangs of
pickpockets, especially places like San Lázaro early in the morning. I was jostled violently and robbed last July, and so was my brother-in-law (a Mexican) a couple of days later - in exactly the same place (he
didn't know of my experience). We should have known better. Never again.

    Low cost airlines in Mexico

    Posted by Expat1 6 March 2006

Mexico has just had three new low cost airlines start up their operations. Azteca Airlines, Volaris, and Interjet all offer low cost flight from Mexico City to other parts of Mexico, including the second city, Guadalajara. So take advantage, and explore more of Mexico when you come.

    Airport transfer: take a taxi

Posted by JoTuckman 25 August 2005

Pre-paid taxi vouchers can be purchased from the booth located in the baggage reclaim department. Authorised cabs can be identified by their white-and-yellow colour scheme, and any other cars should not be considered. Outside of rush hour the metro is a cheap and relatively quick alternative, but reaching the city centre does involves a change of line and may not appeal to those with heavier luggage.

    Mexico City metro system

Posted by SimonPaul 17 May 2006

I found the metro cheap, reliable and safe. One should keep an eye on ones belongings but this can be said of any transport system.

There appears to be no etiquette with regards to entering or leaving the carriages. Once the doors open you rush in/out regardless of what everyone else might be doing which took a little getting used to.

    Using the underground

Posted by flydriver 6 March 2006

A huge underground system that allows you to travel from one end of the city to the other for only 10 pesos. I wouldn't recommend travelling alone. It sometimes seems to be even busier than the streets and gangs of pickpockets do roam fairly freely among the beggars and salesmen who get on at one station and off at the next.

You need to buy a book of tickets in order to travel and even at the bigger stations it can be quite confusing to do so for the first time as none of the rail staff seem too willing to help out. Stick with it though and be careful.
