A busy restaurant (book in advance) underneath the Bazar hotel offering a reasonably priced North African, Turkish and Iranian menu.

Plenty of bars, cafes on Witte de Withstraat to let your grilled chicken kebab and couscous settle, afterwards.

A word of warning though, tried to add 'tourist tax' of a couple of drinks we did not have. Shame, as is put a dampner on an otherwise enjoyable Bazar experience.

A nice beer cafe tucked under Rotterdam's famous 'cubewonings' (cubic houses). One of the best selections of beer in the city in a comfortable, friendly bar. Food is also available. Although I didn't eat here myself, they were serving plenty of it.

The only down-side is that it's too dimly lit if you like to read a book while quaffing the Netherlands' finest ales.

The best thing to do in Rotterdam is leave the railway station, get the no.5 tram down to the river where the SPIDO harbour cruises start from, well worth the hour and a half that it'll take. When you come back, go back east a bit along the riverfront and get one of the classic polished wooden watertaxis to the old Holland America Line HQ on the south bank, now the Hotel New York with a busy bar/restaurant. The 30s style boat costs nearly nothing and was the highlight of my trip.

This festival in Rotterdam brings together garage rock bands from all over the world (the Spanish are the wildest). It is held on the third weekend in June at the Waterfront Club. No half hearted bandwagon jumpers, no lame nostalgia geeks, just full on garage rock. Loud, fast, very dumb, but great fun. Tickets cost 70 Euros for the full four nights.

The Waterfront also hosts The Rotterdam Rumble on the first weekend of September, the musical policy is more sleazy rawk'n'roll than garage, 30 Euros for three nights.
