A window on the ocean
claudette
Set on a beautiful bay on the South Island, this town is a favourite of the bus tours who generally stay for a day and "do" the wildlife attractions, namely whale watching and swimming with dolphins. Both of these are amazing and highly recommended, potentially spiritual experiences. The abundance of wildlife is apparently due to the bay being on a shelf, so that the ocean is almost centre-of-the-earth deep. It's certainly cold enough to give you a shock when dolphin swimming, around 5 degrees C. It's actually a great place to spend a couple of days just relaxing. It has the feeling of a slightly more upmarket Bournemouth, with trendy places to eat and more.
