Still the best coffee in town. OK so all the cool kids say "it's not as good as it was" - and it was great when it was in the old fire station garage - but that doesn't take anything away from the fact that they still do the best coffee in QT. Breakfasts are pretty good too.

A gem of a restaurant and bar tucked underneath Winnies. First of all, you can't help but be amazed at the astounding decor. The whole place is fitted out like a trading emporium of the gold rush days. The food is classic gastro-pub style featuring plenty of 'kiwiana' which we loved. If you stay late enough you will find yourself dancing to classic retro tunes in the bar area, I know we did! The bar features a stunning array of local wines and there are some fantastic international beers on tap. We frequented this bar/restaurant quite a few times and were lucky enough to experience some great live music as well as a DJ spinning vinyl!

The BEST Pizza in Queenstown! Very family friendly and is totally unique. The roof opens! Have never seen that anywhere before. After dinner when the restaurant closes the bar stays open and Winnies turns in to a club. In the time I was there I saw live music, danced all night to DJ's, watched rugby and partied under the stars ... and snow! Love that roof! Love Winnies!

We went skiing in New Zealand when we were visting family and they took us to Queenstown. After a hard day on the slopes, the kids wanted a burger so we reluctantly agreed and ended up having the best burgers of our lives! They have a huge selection of gourmet burgers which come with HUGE portions of chips. There is something for everyone and it is really high quality, made while you wait with friendly chatty staff (even though they are really busy!)

Wanaka is a smaller, less 'touristy' town around an hour from Queenstown. It is quite simply a magical place. Located on the shores of Lake Wanaka it looks out over the lake towards the beautiful Mt Aspiring and arguably the best skifield in New Zealand - Treble Cone. Queenstown gets all the press, but Wanaka is the real jewel in Central Otago's crown.
Obviously New Zealand is famous for its wines and the wineries there are something special, but Cloudy Bay in particular deserves a mention.
The reason why this winery is so special is that not only does it have fantastic wine (particularly the Pinot Noir) and offer tastings, but it's the added extras that distinguish it. It has a lovely outside area where you can sit and sample brilliant food from the restaurant, or, and this is what we enjoyed, you can go to the on-site cheesery and order a cheese platter made to your specifications with some lovely cured meats as well.
The winery also has a lovely shop on site selling all sorts of crafts, food and local souvenires. A truly lovely place to enjoy a bottle and spend a few hours, if not a whole afternoon!
Beautiful location, food, wine and great staff. Most memorable.

Short drive from Queenstown.
The restaurant has stunning views over the vineyards and surrounding area. You can enjoy exceptional food and sample the award winning wine made there. It is well worth the trip!

Central Otago has more than its fair share of wineries where you can enjoy tastings and/or a great meal among some of New Zealand’s finest scenery.
One of my favourites is the Amisfield Winery which is halfway between Queenstown and Arrowtown on the shores of Lake Hayes. It’s a fantastic place for a relaxed lunch or dinner with a great outdoor terrace (weather permitting). If they’ve got any left, try their rose but I’m afraid I may have drunk it all on my last visit.

The best burgers in the world - we found the counter down a back alley, and were shocked to be given homemade aoli with our chips! Not the food we were used to as backpackers.
So good there is even a Facebook group devoted to it.
Queenstown
Travelling through Central Otago in summer, especially around Cromwell, Queenstown, and Roxburgh, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and buy fruit.
Browse through the boxes and search out succulent apricots, peaches, nectarines, raspberries, gooseberries, apples or plums to refresh your journey. It's worthwhile buying a large chilly bin (cool box) for storage if you're driving.
Burger joint in Queenstown. The tagline goes that Ferg gives good burg. Well, he certainly does.

Great pizzas and pasta. It's a very busy restaurant and you have to be prepared to share a table with other diners as soon as places become available. However, as a result you do get to meet people and hear other travellers' tales.

NZ Walks organise a variety of guided walks at various levels of difficulty. We did the 10 mile Mt. Aspiring National Park walk in a very small group with an excellent guide who carried our lunch! Pick up from various hotels in Queenstown.
From Queenstown we flew on a Cessna 207 over the mountains to Milford Sound, cruised on the sound and then flew back again. The scenery from the plane was breathtaking and all round a much more exciting way to visit Milford than the long drive from Queenstown.
Loads of companies do it, just ask at the tourist info office in Queenstown.
Park Lane is a new boutique hotel in Queenstown. All rooms have spectacular views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountain range - run by a kiwi and Brit wife (married in Feb 07!) Great breakfasts, fun atmosphere, superbly appointed rooms -15 minute lakeside stroll to town - 30 minute lake walk to Frankton. Guilia and Roger have great local knowledge too!
