

Although you should mainly go to Lake Wanaka for the stunning lake and the surrounding views, it is also worth visiting the very cool, independent cinema that this tiny town has.
You can kick back and relax on the lovely, beaten up sofas (instead of the uncomfortable chairs normally found in this type of establishment!) There is even an old shell of a car, decked out with cushions, which you can sit in!
Lovely small town about an hour away from Queenstown. You can do all the same activities like bungee jumping, paragliding, etc for half the price.

The fantastic trout fishery of New Zealand's South Island is currently collapsing because of the spread of the noxious algae didymo (or rock snot). Already present in 21 known rivers, including such iconic waterways as the Mataura, it is absolutely ruining the unique and precious nature of these places. Get down here asap as they will soon be gone in terms of fishing.
