This erstwhile home of sardine canning and, more recently, the North Sea oil industry is a surprisingly attractive place with its timber architecture and medieval cathedral. The harbour is bright, fresh and pretty and Norway’s fourth largest city is also the base for people visiting the stunning beauty of the Lysefjord. If you love everything to do with boats and ships then this is the place to come.
