Ten-hour rail journey along the grassy altiplano. The highest point, La Raya pass, is 4321 metres above sea level. An at times bleak but stunning journey that descends along the Vilcanota river to Cuzco. Spoil yourselves and go first class. Memorable train journey among hospitable people.

Fruit is prohibitively expensive for islanders, and stationery is a very welcome gift for the children.

If staying overnight, you'll be allocated a family home to stay by the island council or elders. This is to ensure income from tourists gets spread fairly.

You can buy the fruit on the edge of Lake Titicaca, and just give it out to islanders you encounter walking up from the boat and in the town.

If you would like to visit the school, go with your guide to ask to donate stationery for/to the children.

You may find it one of the most rewarding aspects of your trip.

Choose to stay on the shores of Lake Titicaca rather than in a downtown hotel in Puno. The hotels are inadequately built to cope with the noise from the taxi drivers horns or the disco booming away until 3am.

The 8 hour journey appeared daunting, but travel first class and experience the fashion show, Pisco Sour tastings, traditional entertainment - never mind the food - and the views and the time just flashed by.

A must see - you can book a whole package involving the floating islands and Taquile, a forlorn island in Lake Titicaca from where you have a fantastic view over the peaceful lake!

You will be welcomed by Maria, one of the tourist guides. Ask her about the island, she is a lovely Indian teacher and very communicative.

From Puno you go by motor boat.

Man-made floating reed islands holding 5-6 huts each afloat the mighty Lake Titicaca - breathtaking. Amantani natural islands housing approx 1,000 residents - magnificent. Staying with an Amantani family, cooking with them, laughing with them, playing football with them, dancing with them - unmissable.

The islands are around a two hour boat ride from Puna.
