    Wolski Forest

    Posted by chris2005 1 May 2006

This forest is great for walks but even better for biking. The tourist office in Krakow can provide clear maps showing the cycle routes from the city centre to the forest. Bikes can be hired from numerous places (listed below, or ask the tourist office).

The Wolski Forest is set in the glorious hills which lie to the west of Krakow.

    Vistula River Cruises

Posted by Lukasz 4 May 2006

In the summer (May – September) several companies operate regular cruises on the river Vistula. You can choose from ½ hour cruises within the city boundaries, or a longer trip to Bielany or Tyniec and catch sights such as Wawel Castle, Manggha – Centre of Japanese Art and Technology, Skałka monastery and Kosciuszko Mound.

Żegluga Krakowska offers a round trip Wawel-Tyniec Abbey-Wawel on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. (Tickets 20 PLN; concessions 15 PLN) and one hour river trips every day through Krakow (Tickets 12 PLN; concessions 10 PLN).

Piotruś Pan and Sobieski Boats have cruises to Bielany (2 hours) and to Tyniec (3 hours), every day from 10 a.m. until dusk.

River Tram has trips along the river through Krakow and to Tyniec. (tickets: 8 PLN on weekdays and 10 PLN on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays; concessions 6 and 8 PLN respectively)

Board the boats at the Czerwieński Embankment (opposite Wawel castle, between Dębnicki and Grunwaldzki bridges).

A memorial built in the 1820s to celebrate the life of Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko (1746-1818) in the form of a circular mound, which you can climb for a view over Kraków and the surrounding countryside. A small but fascinating museum at the base charts the life of Kościuszko. There is also a separate exhibition of wax figures and a hotel.

    Bielany Monastery

    Posted by chris2005 29 April 2006

This monastery is sat on top of Srebena Gora (Silver Gora) overlooking the Wisla (Vistula) river. It is worth seeing just for this view alone. You can see the whole of Krakow from up here. But women beware - the monastery is only open to female tourists for just 12 days of the year. Male tourists can go any day.

Bielany Monastery is located to the south-west of Krakow city centre. You can take a tram there but it is far more enjoyable and quicker to take the boat up the Wisla (Vistula) river. It goes from the port at the foot of Wawel hill in Krakow city centre. It is open from 8am to 11am and 3pm to 4.30pm.

    Bielany Forest

    Posted by chris2005 29 April 2006

Bielany Forest is where the Krakovians go to escape from the hustle and bustle of their city. Children can run around there and families can enjoy picnics or walks. It has splendid views of the Wisla (Vistula) river and the Tatra mountains.

Bielany Forest lies to the south-west of Krakow city centre. It is a 25 min walk from there. You can also catch a tram.
