Uglich

Uglich lies on the river Volga and is currently home to about 40,000 inhabitants. It's a popular stop for the river boats and is therefore often suddenly descended upon by tourists who wander around for a couple of hours and then disappear just as rapidly. The town sports its own Kremlin, now somewhat past its one-time splendour, but which is still well worth seeing. It was also home to the world-famous Chaika watch factory, sadly now closed. A visit here will perhaps give an insight into how post-Communist times are affecting the majority who don't live in the large cities, but also a glimpse into the history of rural town-life in the era of the Tsars.
