During my stay in St Louis I lived with a host family and found that doing so opened up many opportunities to explore the 'real' St Louis, a colonial French-speaking fishing town in the north of the country. If not comfortable staying with a family, I would highly recommend asking to take a few classes in traditional music and dance from a local. These classes reveal the true beat to which the town moves and as long as you don't mind making a fool of yourself, you will soon have an enthusiastic dance squad consisting of local children, eager to follow your progress. The instructor is very eager to show you a little of the town after the class and speaks a little English in addition to French. With St Louis representing an opportunity to truly experience African life; it would be a shame to miss out.

Ask at the hotel you are staying at or any English volunteers that are working in the town
