    Thumper

Posted by thatsgreatforme 3 October 2006

It is a bar/club on the side of Goodwood Park Hotel. Goodwood is one of the oldest and most beautiful hotels in Singapore. The bar has a large outside seating area perfect for people watching and enjoying the hot climate!

Fridays and Saturdays are packed out with Singapore's best and brightest and the queue often extends toward the York Hotel.
The house band are a unique Asian experience which some Western travellers may not like, but there is also a DJ who caters to most tastes. The staff are friendly and the owners are extremely hospitable.

Oh, and Saturday night is model night and you can find the smallish Singapore fashion scene getting smashed there most weekends

    Ground Floor, Goodwood Park Hotel
    22 Scotts Road, Singapore 228221
    (next to Far East Plaza)

    Hawker Markets & Little India

Posted by MattRees 3 October 2006

The night markets offer delicious food on a budget and a great atmosphere. Pick up some great satay to share with friends and then wander along the waterfront after a couple of tiger beers.

Little india is also a great place to buy some amazing cheap food and is often thriving in the evening

    Boat Quay Bars

Posted by bugilgede 3 October 2006

From Penny Black to BQ, the bars at the top end of Boat Quay are a world class place to hang out in the early evening.

Where else can you find a place as idyllic as this, just seconds from the centre of the city's financial district? Light rippling off the water, multi-coloured converted "go-downs", old river taxis still plying the river and historical buildings on the other bank?

Yes, the restaurants further down the river really are pure tourist fodder, so you'll want to go somewhere else to eat, and Harry's Bar might be more famous for Nick Leeson than anything else, but don't let the stigma of going to an "expat hangout" divert from a genuine part of Singapore's culture.

The expats have been here since the place began, after all, and you may know someone who works nearby - an ideal excuse to drink in the atmosphere.

If this doesn't appeal, stroll up to The Fullerton, cross the bridge, and head for Indochine and its Opium Bar where you can stare back at Boat Quay from the other bank - and probably get some better food.

    Boat Quay, Raffles Place MRT.

Singaporeans are proud of their gleaming city - but don't often mention that the hard labour is done by an army of migrant workers imported from around the region. On their (rare) days off, each nationality gravitates to a different part of the city, where you can find great food, cheap CDs and other products from their homelands, and some crazy karaoke-disco bars.

For Burmese stuff, head for Peninsular Plaza; for Thai, hit Golden Mile Complex. The Phillipino maids have made Lucky Plaza their own, while the Bangladeshi construction workers descend on Little India in their thousands on Sundays to chat and shop and eat.

Peninsular Plaza: 111, North Bridge Road
Golden Mile Complex: 5001, Beach Road
    Lucky Plaza: 304, Orchard Road
    Little Dhaka: around Veerasamy Road
