The delightful town of Liptovsky Mikulas is situated at the eastern tip of Liptovska Mara lake in north-eastern Slovakia. The small pedestrianised town centre is clustered around the beautiful Svaty (Saint) Mikulas church and a stream flows through the completely renovated streets. The main square, Namestie Osloboditelov, is famous as the venue for the gruesome execution of Juraj Janosik (1688-1733), the folk hero known as the ‘Slovak Robin Hood’ who was hung by a hook piercing through his ribcage.
Liptovsky Mikulas has some excellent pensions and restaurants and makes a good base for exploring the Chocske vrchy mountains and the Western Tatra range (Zapadne Tatry) to the north of town.
