Ávila is famous as being the most complete walled city in Spain. The 11th century walls rise high above the surrounding plains of Ávila province so it is a really dramatic city. As Ávila is renowned as the birthplace of Saint Teresa - a figurehead of Spanish Catholicism, it is inevitable that the majority of Ávila's sights are connected with her life and celebrated actions.
