You want to experience Barcelona in a completely different way? Then participate at one of Cooltra's City tours on a scooter. I have done that on my last trip in this beautiful city and it was crazy! It is like being a local person, driving to places you couldn't reach normally and a great alternative to the tourist bus. You should live this experience, I recommend it!

Escape the heat of the city. Head for the brutalist, concrete building on the beach at San Sebastian in Barceloneta beneath the Montjuic cable car tower.

It contains two glorious, pristine, elevated outdoor pools with amazing views down the beach all the way to Forum. Take one of the loungers and watch the locals frolic. Retreat to Barrio Gothica at night for more fun.

The district of Gracia in Barcelona is one of the main student areas and therefore has a laidback, arty feel. There are many little squares, churches, bars and cafes to explore as well as Gaudi's Parc Guell within walking distance. When you're wandering about under the stars there are young, interesting people to meet in every square.

It's a lovely place to stay, much more relaxed than the city centre and easy to get to by metro and cheap(ish) by taxi in the early hours of the morning. Also, if you fancy a day by the sea, skip the undesirable beach in the city (Barcelonetta) and head for Sitges, 15 minutes by train, for a lazy day by the water and a big seafood paella, getting the last train back (about 10 pm) and heading out into the city.

• Bohemian San Tropez atmosphere in Cadaqués, former artistic refuge to Dali and Picasso

• Calella de Palafrugell for its postcard prettiness and the havanera (sea shanty) concerts every July, without forgetting the Costa Brava Jazz festival perched on top of a cliff in a botanical garden

• Medes Islands by kayak with a tutor-guide where you’ll be able to check out the local fauna. Just as long as you want to (you don’t have to know how to) row and don’t mind falling out (you do have to know how to swim!)

• Little gems of sheltered and untouched coves in Pas, Moll Grec and the my favourite la Fosca in Palamós

• La Cerdyana, pijolàndia (yuppyville) or area of outstanding beauty, you decide

• Vall d’Aran, beautiful landscape, Romanesque churches, great skiing and extremely cold
