This is a place you must go to if you are in Barcelona for a short break. The tapas are fabulous, and the restaurants are in fantastic locations. It's not expensive either.
A fantastic traditional Barcelona deli. I went for breakfast and had a delicious smoked herring, pepper and onion bocadillo (baguette), and the classic cured ham and tomato bocadillo (pan tomaca). They make it at the counter and bring it through to you in a back room, where vintage Catalan gentlemen are already on the cava (this at 9:30 am)

This is a hotel in Barcelona with a great location and a friendly staff. My room had a balcony, was clean, and I had a good time there.
Behind the bars and cafes that front Barcelona's marina in the redeveloped old port, the five and six storey blocks, once home to seamen and dockers in the nineteenth century, now house a mix of workers, students and a few self-catering tourists, like us.
Vaguely uneasy on our first evening in the dark narrow streets, we heard the jazz from "el fil Ferr" and went for a beer in the lively bar. Run by an energetic young trio, it offers light meals - meat if you want it, but try the deliciously varied vegetarian plate.
The wall posters speak of leftish politics; the clientele seemed to be doing the same, but exchanged smiles and a few friendly words in English in return for our attempts at Catalan. No other Brits in sight.
Two minutes from Barceloneta beach; closed Mondays; el fil Ferr, carrer Sant Carles 29, Barceloneta; Tel 93 221 98 36
Fabulous bar and restaurant - owned by the lovely Alex with excellent cocktails from their (very lovely) bartender. Relaxed, sophisticated - go for dinner and find yourself staying all evening.
Consill de cent 211 - five minutes from the Plaza de Cataluna.
It’s not called Tancat, it’s not called anything. It’s just a shutter door on the corner of Calle Carmen and Calle Sant Llatzer. Knock it, wait, smile and walk in. Inside it can be empty, full, serious, boisterous. Always a bit dishevelled but cheap and open very late. Barcelona has a number of these “nod-nod, wink-wink” bars. Just keep your eyes peeled.
This little cocktail bar has been going for decades. Tell the besuited bartenders your drink preferences and they will come up with a cocktail that is just right for you. Charmingly old-fashioned (including the prices).

This cool café, closed in winter, is in a pretty and surprisingly quiet square off the Ramblas and a great lunch spot. Locals and savvy tourists tuck into salads, pastas and quiches as their kids happily run around or go on the swings.

Very swish tapas bar and restaurant. You can eat at the restaurant at the back or at the bar as I did. Wonderful fresh ingredients and simple yet delightful dishes. The staff very friendly and helpful too.

A very funky and opulent bar, with red walls and midnight blue ceilings, plush fabrics and original 60s chairs. Friendly staff. They do lots of cocktails but the wine is also lovely.
Quintana 6, off Calle de la Boqueria
A beautiful house on a hillside converted into a bar/disco with lovely garden and terrace. Absolutely great on a summer's night. The clientele consists of "beautiful people", but it’s really good fun.
Avenida Tibidabo 61
Great and incredibly chilled place for a glass of champagne and the largest gin and tonics ever. Relaxing sofas and trendy place to watch the world go by or just relax before setting out on a full on night time tour of Barcelona. Somewhat expensive but worth splashing out for something special.

This is a great bar in Barcelona. The clientelle is a mixture of Brits and Catalans enjoying an exotic Guinness and a natter on the terrace or in the wood panelled rooms. It’s a 15 minute walk from the Ramblas so it avoids the stag and hen party trawl that has infested a lot of other English bars in the city and, as it’s a haven for expats, it’s also a great venue to get tips on other places to go.
The staff are really helpful and friendly and add to the mixture of families and friends that hang out there.
When I lived in Barcelona I spent far too long here and made friends for life so I may be biased but if you say I sent you they’ll treat you kindly. No, really.

This is an excellent bar, a really great place to hang out during the day. In the evening it’s really lively - great tunes, drinks and cool classy decor.
23 Carrer Ferran, Barcelona 08002, Spain
The charm of this place overcomes its theme-park tackiness, despite the fake fairy-tale forest, waterfall and out-of-place four-poster bed which you’re frustratingly not aloud to lie on. Great for a first date as long as it's not a local.
Passatge de la Banca 7; nearest metro: Drassanes
Just behind the legendary Boqueria market, this is best practice in regeneration. It has an eclectic design, sunny terrace by day and discrete candle-light by night as well as best value multicultural dishes. Inclusive and yet trendy. Great brekkie and home-made milkshakes.

Some bars resemble shrines on which the faithful worship the gods of good drink, good food and good companionship. This is one of these. Just a hop from Picasso Museum (Barri Gotic), it melts ageing local customers, trendy young crowds and the odd tourist into revering its wonderful cava (really affordable) and great tapas (don´t miss the anchovies).
C/Montcada 22, Barcelona, phone(00 34 93) 319 7003
A party palace of a hostel with clean, modern bathrooms located in the gorgeous (though rowdy by night) Placa Reial just off Las Ramblas. Lots of fun with organised pub crawls and a rooftop bar, Kabul can be noisy at night but is never boring. Good-sized lockers by each bunk and a vending machine selling one-euro beers in the bar. Ace.
Tucked away in a square in the Born area (near the seafront) is this wonderful little tapas bar. Expect to queue ... in fact the queue is half the fun as it snakes up and down and around the bar. You can drink while you queue and enjoy the atmosphere. When you come to order, if you don't speak Spanish, just indicate that you want it all. The food will keep coming until you signal you've had enough! All food is cooked fresh in front of you and the staff are a lot of fun.
Plaça les Olles, 8 08003 - Barcelona www.calpep.net
A great 1930s Art Deco cocktail bar near the main shopping areas. Original sketches by Miro adorn the walls. No cocktail list but the waiters pride themselves on their ability and knowledge.
