Home of the conquistadors
1001
Just one of the undiscovered towns of the once remote Extremadura province. Caceres has wonderfully intact ancient town centre still within the Moorish walls.
Most notable are the amazing collection of palacios, churches and monastries built during the extravagant days of the conquistadors. The new-found wealth poured into Extremadura, which was the birth place of nearly all the most notorious conquistadors. Wandering through the steep, cobbled streets and alleys between high stone walls enclosing scented gardens and patios is an evocative experience; secret Spain at its best.
Many of the palacios are open and used as museums, art centres or magical restaurants and bars with jasmine-scented gardens. Outside the protection of the Moorish walls the Plaza Mayor is where the new town begins with all the attendant delights of Spanish dash and style.
