Malasaña is a street and an area well known by all true 16-30 Madrileños. In the day time you can shop for some retro treasures in the two 'Popland' boutiques (one for bags, badges and tee-shirts, the other for sixties home decorations and posters). Then, well after dark, you can return and be part of the Madrid sub-culture night life. Go into some bars off Plaza Dos de Mayo and you'll think you've stepped onto the set of Austin Powers (without the irony!) There are all types of bars and clubs round here, but they all have one thing in common: the cool factor. The music is cool, the people dress cool, but most importantly, the attitude is cool, that is to say, laid back.
Malasaña district. Nearest tube: Tribunal.
For a bit of arty sophistication, high ceilings, cigarette smoke and some decent cocktails. Gentlemen once met prostitutes here, which, they say, is why the blinds go down as soon as it gets dark (so no one can look in).

I have just done Victory Over The Sun in the San Cristobal de Los Angeles metro station, 15.06.06. This is a club with no dancing, which is a refreshing change from the formulaic local clubs.
For a cover charge of 60 euros you can drink as much Cava as you wish (the bar only serve Cava) and watch/participate in performance art (much blood letting). Live Electronic music was the order of the day, which allowed easy communication between the sexes unlike the Madrid dance clubs.
Many of Madrid’s club elite were in attendance, including many club owners and promoters, which may indicate that change is coming on the scene. Victory Over the Sun is based in Dublin and will not return to Madrid until November 06. I believe that it will trigger a sea change in Madrid’s nightlife that will bring it into the 21st century.

Simply the best venue in Madrid on a Friday evening: techno, electronica, alternative. It's the one place I miss from my city. 1am - 6am.
Mesonero Romanos 13 (on the corner of Gran Via 34). Callao or Gran Via Underground Stations.
A classic. The perfect spot to enjoy music, especially if you just care about it, and you'll never meet Becks there. Superb. Try to get there before 3 am.
C/Jardines 3. Metro Gran Via- Sol
A club near Plaza Mayor. If you like house, you'll love Om (Fri, Sat) and Weekend (Sun). The crowd, bar staff and even security are incredibly friendly and the music is terribly good.
