Walking from Pitres to Trevelez

Posted by olllyt 24 April 2012

This is a challenging, beautiful walk up Spain's highest mountain. Begin in Trevelez which is one of the highest settlements in Spain. It is off the beaten track and has a really authentic feel. Almost at the head of the valley there are several restaurants with roof terraces where you can dine surrounded by mountains looking down to the coast. The climb should take six or seven hours but rather than do it all in one, camp below the peak in the siete de lagunas, a limpid clear lake about 150m below the summit. You are high, almost 3500m, so you may be a bit chilly and it is worth having a good sleeping bag. The walk takes you through ancient fields where the Moors built narrow irrigation channels that still contain fast flowing water. Go in the first week of August and if there is still snow on the summit you will be joined by the locals who pay homage to Mary Virgin of the snow for whom there is a small shrine at the peak. Rise early, make the climb to the summit, then double back on yourself and along the ridge down to a small village called Capilieria. This will take a day but you should in time for a well deserved beer and supper back in civillisation.

Fly to Malaga and take the bus to Orgiva. Change again for Trevelez. There is a camp site in Pitres with a swimming pool if you wanted to extend you trip. This was a good base for day walks.

Fantastic setting high up in the Sierra Nevada mountains in Southern Spain, lovely accommodation, excellent food and superb guided mountain biking. We have been twice now and intend to come back as much as possible.

Mountain biking tour company based above the village of Berchules. They have different packages available for different levels of experience. Awesome views, great tracks and great people. The added bonus for us was the full-time 4WD support while riding which made riding accessible to everyone. Highly recommend this company - we had a great time. Seriously - go!
