The coffee is decent and there’s a little cult bookshop downstairs along with free wi-fi for all which is a real bonus for travellers with laptops as using the internet can be a pricey experience in Stockholm.

When you get to the roundabout turn left onto Karlavagen. The side streets along this route between Karlavagen and Narvavagen are beautiful, with several
boutiques and lovely cafes.

This converted prison on the small island of Langholmen was home to Stockholm’s most notorious criminals until 1975. It now serves as an inexpensive hotel/hostel where the former cells have been turned into rooms, complete with original doors and small windows (minus the iron bars). Rooms are pretty basic, as you’d expect, but the building itself is impressive and has retained loads of authentic features. It’s absolutely vast, and has a restaurant, bar, cafe and museum. The traditional Swedish breakfast is worth paying extra for but we were disappointed not to see porridge on the menu.

Those visiting Stockholm now that the weather is getting warmer should visit Lasse i Parken on Södermalm. Lasse i Parken is by day an open air cafe. Lots of long wooden tables shaded by trees, or little round cafe tables in the sun nestled among flower beds. They do a decent line in sandwiches, cakes etc. Last season they also had a good lunch buffé. The main attraction however is sitting in the sun in a kind of old fashioned milieu. They also have theatre/comedy/music events in the evenings. Opens for the spring/summer in april. Drop by on the way to or from Långholmen, an island/peninsula nearby formerly used as a prison, now a popular beach and bathing spot for Stockholm's inhabitants. Långholmen is great for picnics along the islands treelined coast.

From Gamla Stan, cross the bridge over the main north-south link road towards the west of the island, onto Riddar-Holmen. On the westernmost point of this island there is an outdoor cafe serving nice sandwiches and drinks, including beer and wine.

It's a real sun trap and you can see right across the city part of Lake Malaren, where numerous ferries and pleasure boats go to and fro. Because it's off the main tourist trails it's generally peaceful. Some tables are under trees, some are for pro-sun-worshippers. There is no better place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon reading the Observer you picked up from the main railway station earlier.
