In the Old Town, this little café is friendly and cheaper than most places in the area. The coffee is decent and there’s a little cult bookshop downstairs along with free wi-fi for all which is a real bonus for travellers with laptops as using the internet can be a pricey experience in Stockholm.
Stora Nygatan 35
Youthful crowds of artists and designers have made this neighborhood in the southern inner city of Stockholm into a trendy destination. Actually called Sodermalm but nicknamed SoFo (inspiration from London’s notorious Soho?), it’s a bohemian mecca that’s home to numerous individual shops and tiny cafés and restaurants, all with a fun, lively atmosphere. Take a stroll around its squares or enjoy a picnic in the park at Nytorget, right in the center of SoFo.
Nearest metro station is Medborgarplatsen (Green Line)
A great new Indian restaurant at 90 Luntmakargatan. We had more than we could eat for about £12 each and the daily house recommendations are good value. The food was freshly prepared and delicious and the staff very friendly.
Hermans Tradgard, is a vegetarian buffet restaurant up on the heights of the south island of Stockholm; Sodermalm. It offers great value - all homecooked veg food, wonderful views over the water across to Djurgarden & the city from its big outdoor garden seating area. Don't be put off by it being only vegetarian - I have been there with people who love their meat but was positively surprised how much they enjoyed vegetarian food. There's usually 4 hot dishes and 8-10 salads plus homemade breads etc. Don't forget to incl a lush cake in your meal deal!
Fjallgatan 23, Slussen underground
A no-frills vegetarian restaurant situated in the Old Town. There are usually only a couple of choices but the food is always delicious and plentiful, Vegan friendly too. Free bread and coffee are provided, they are fine about you bringing your own drink (alcoholic or not). Meals work out at about a fiver a head which is very cheap for Stockholm.
Stora Nygatan 11, Gamla Stam
Gravlax (marinated salmon) is particularly delicious if you like that sort of thing at all; so is cloudberry brandy or preserve. Low-alcohol beer is refreshing, cheap and widely available.
All visitors must try a hot dog whilst in Sweden as they are amazing. Get a 'grillad korv med brod med ketchup och senap och rostad lok' (grilled in a bun with ketchup, mustard and dry roasted onion). One of the best places in Stockholm is Ostermalm’s Grillen on Ostermalms Torg.
While on Djurgarden you should visit a restaurant called Bla Porten. Ideally get there for lunch and sample their excellent buffet of home-made bread and cakes and other Swedish food.
Djurgardsvagen 64, next to the Liljevalch Art Gallery Museum.

I love Cafe String. It's a really cosy retro-cafe with huge windows made for people-watching. And all the things in there, furniture included, are for sale.
Cafe String, Nytorgsgatan 38, Stockholm.

The best korv booth in town. You can choose from over a dozen types of gourmet sausage and the fillings are top notch. The locals head there for a light lunch too. 45kr per korv.
Next to the Post Office on Nybrogatan 55
Easily reached by train, this beautiful seaside suburb south of Stockholm is an ideal place to visit for a day trip from the Swedish capital. The small sandy Baltic beaches are ideal for children and there are old-fashioned separate male and female nude swimming areas and saunas. You can go for walks in the woods, picking berries and mushrooms, or try one of the bars and fish restaurants.
Take the historic train ride from Slussen station in Stockholm to Saltsjöbaden.
This is the best Indian restaurant in Stockholm. It is highly recommended, has nice staff and is smack in the middle of the Old Town.
Lilla Karachi, Lilla Nygatan 12, Stockholm.

This tiny cafe in the old town does the most fantastic hot chocolate, served steaming in big bowls. Go in winter and see the Christmas market before cosying down in one of the corners of Chokladkoppen with a good book.
Stortorget 20
Two restaurants side by side in Gamla Stan (the old town): the Grill serves great steaks, burgers, beers and cocktails, the Bistro excellent modern French and Swedish food and good French wine. I've been countless times and always been utterly charmed by the food and people.

A great invention which you should always look for when you're getting hungry is 'dagens lunch' (literally lunch of the day) which is always good value and normally includes salad, a hot main course, bread, coffee and drinks for about 60-150kr depending on where you go. Usually served between 12-3pm.
Even if a restaurant seem to have pricey dinner/a la carte offerings there should be reasonable lunch options available. Worth it, definitely in the more posh places such as Operakällaren.
Gamla Stan is the old town of Stockholm, with narrow cobbled little streets. Lots of medieval history and the Royal Castle, Storkyrkan (oldest church in town), and Stortorget (where the bloodbath of Stockholm took place in the 16th century. Check out the red brick building with white stones on one side of the square - the white stones denote how many people got their head chopped off. Nice!).
There are plenty of medieval cafes to head into for lunch or fika (morning or afternoon tea/coffee break) - sitting sipping hot chocolate in a medieval stone cellar complete with arches and stuff is exciting for most people. Chokladkoppen on Stortorget is always good, and so is Kaffegillet on Trångsund.
Västerlånggatan is the main drag, but sadly quite touristy these days. But if you're in the business of getting some reindeer slippers or the like, this is where to go. Österlånggatan is nicer, with little antiques shops and galleries. Next to Gamla Stan is Riddarholmen, which also has lots of history. The Parliament and the beautiful Riddarholmskyrkan church are located here.
Good places for food/drink:
Pontus in the Green House on Österlånggatan (good for lunch) - traditional Swedish cuisine but with an exotic twist.
Pontus by the Sea on Skeppsbrokajen (good for lunch) - see above.
Grill Ruby on Österlånggatan (lunch) - brasserie.
Källaren Movitz on Tyska Brinken – doesn’t look that special, but the restaurant downstairs is good for Swedish food.
Järnet Matsal & Bar on Österlånggatan is cosy and does good food.
Engelen/Kolingen on Kornhamnstorg - a nice old-school type of place where you're pretty much guaranteed to get a good night out.
Walk from Norrmalm along Drottninggatan towards the Houses of Parliament, or northwards from Slussen.
This is the best hotdog stall in Sweden! 15 different types of korv (sausage) from across Europe and a variety of sauces, served in a hunk of fresh bread. At 45kr they aren't cheap, but every one of my friends thanks me for taking them there.
Nybrogatan 55 - next to the post office. Deepest Östermalm!
Take a break from pricey restaurants at this good value place on Soder. It does a tasty all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet and the seating area has great views over the water.
Fjallgatan 23
Tranan serves old-fashioned, home-made meatballs with lingonberry jam and pickled cucumbers, at a very reasonable price. If they're not on the menu, just ask for them. After dinner you can go downstairs to the bar and enjoy cool music while rubbing shoulders with trendy media-types.

This restaurant in Gamla Stan serves up a superb range of traditional Swedish food.
In winter there is an ice gallery right opposite where you can pop in for a shot of vodka.
