For me the undisputed jewel of the Alps is the Swiss resort of Champery. The dream combination of a vast skiing area and a charming alpine village crammed full of quaint chalets, with stunning views of ‘Les Dents du Midi’ peaks from all points.

The only downside is the wait (in high season) to take the cable-car at the beginning and end of the day, but this is easily solved by a couple of tips; in the morning, take the free 5 minute bus ride to Grand Paradis and then the new high speed chairlift to Planachaux; in the afternoon ski back down the same way, stopping off at the quintessential mountain restaurant ‘Chez Marius’ for a ‘vin chaud’ as you wait for the sun to start setting.

As for the nightlife, I’d recommend a small bar hidden away on the main street called ‘La Crevasse’, run by two friendly Canadians, who as well as being passionate skiers, have also brought North American style hospitality with a happy hour until 9.00pm, pitchers of beer, cheap cocktails etc. There’s also a small dance floor, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself strutting your merry stuff with your ski boots still on!

There is no better place on earth to relax and soothe aching muscles after a hard day negotiating the Swiss Wall in the Portes du Soleil. Open all year round, the (outdoor) Thermes are magical when there's metres of snow on the ground.
