If you plan to travel using Swiss trains (and I would recommend this) then you could consider buying something called a 'halb-tax' before you purchase any tickets.

It costs around 200chf (that might be a year or so out of date) but once you have it you can purchase train tickets - first or second class - at half price.

So, for example, a trip from Zurich to Milan in first-class would drop from around 300 to 150 chf.

So, if you plan to travel, say, more than three times it pays for itself. I have another tip of a similar nature: Swiss trains are a lot cleaner, newer and better serviced than Italian ones, so if you are travelling from Switzerland to Italy (which is a great journey) then either ask at the ticket counter who is the operator, try to get 'SBB' trains (the Swiss ones) rather than TrenItalia.

Another good operator is CISAlpino which I believe is some kind of joint operation.

The Rheinfalls is the largest waterfall in Europe. Located about 1/2 hour by car and under 1 hour by train from Zurich, they are a great day trip when you are visiting this pretty city. What is particularly interesting is how close you can get to the falls. There is a platform extending out over the water so that you can feel the power of the water as it rushes beneath you. If you still have not had enough, you can take a boat excursion right to the foot of the falls and even disembark and climb stairs to the top of a huge rock that is sitting squarely in the middle of the falls. For the less adventurous, there is a nice cafe that is well positioned so that you can enjoy watching the others while you stay warm inside.

For a super quick two-day weekend’s skiing, fly to Zurich and head to Flumserberg. With just a 45-minute transfer, you could fly in on a Saturday morning and hit the slopes by lunch. While its very much a local resort and you're unlikely to hear any other Brits, there's some nice off-piste in the tree line and plenty of winter hiking or husky sledging for non skiers. Best of all, the views are stunning.
