Ras Kutani

Posted by happyholidays 27 August 2010

A beautiful laid back, romantic, beach hotel, where you really do feel like a castaway.
The airy cottages are extremely comfortable and spacious, with good bathroom, huge bed and covered terrace with hammocks and seating. They are well spaced out so all you can hear is the ocean.
The food is excellent, with the emphasis on fish for lunch and dinner.
You can spend all day chilling on the beach but there are other activities, such as the walk around the lagoon through the forest, kayaking round the lagoon and boogie boarding. There are no motorised beach activities, which is a bonus.
The lodge is involved in a turtle conservation project so sometimes you can see the baby turtles hatching, unfortunately that didn't happen while we were there but it must be fantastic.
There were quite a few honeymooners there while we were and I can see why.

Lutoni

This small shop in a dead-end street just off Haile Selassie in Msasani sells all sorts of produce that will warm the hearts of caricature Guardian readers: organic nuts, seeds and other foods including excellent jams; hand woven textiles; products made of recycled materials. Excellent service and fair prices attract a wide clientele, but obviously mainly catering to the large local expat community.

Fish Market

Posted by york137 24 September 2008

All the possible processes in fish trading can be seen in one place. The catch is landed from boats onto the shore, from where it goes straight to the auction section to be sold to wholesalers. From there it is a quick trip across the road, past the stalls selling shells and other fishy artefacts and to the retail section.

At the back the fish is fried in a haze of fire and smoke and ready for selling to the public.

On the shore and at the end of Ocean Drive where it turns into Kivukoni Front

Saadani Reserve

If you fancy a bit of safari when going to Zanzibar, I can recommend Saadani. It's only a few hours' drive from Dar es Salaam, or I believe you can fly if you are flash!

It's got loads of big game such as lions and elephants and the lodge we stayed at was right on the beach.

Saadani Lodge has a website: www.saadanilodge.com
