Amedros Cafe & Restaurant

Posted by matteri 22 March 2010

This is an excellent warm restaurant right in the old city center Sultanahmet, where you are always served by the fantastic friendly team.
You will have a gourmet experience and live any food lovers dream, with many different options on the menu - Turkish and Ottoman, international ( very good steak choices), and some seafood options. All were so good but we have enjoyed the Ottoman part of the menu most - the apple steak was amazing too. We ate at Amedros many times for lunch and dinner during our one week stay in İstanbul.

Veni Vidi Travel Turkey

Posted by BSBT 1 March 2010

We visited Turkey in September / October 2009 and, apart from the return flights, Veni Vidi Turkey made all the arrangements to suit our timetable and budget, including private tours with guides and drivers, hotels and internal flights and transfers. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip, which took in Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale, classical sites in the Aegean area and Gallipoli. Everything worked very well and we had excellent service from Mr Bulent Albayrak and all of our guides. It was a truly memorable holiday and we would have no hesitation in returning to Turkey or in recommending Veni Vidi to anyone. Malcolm & Erica Lee, England

Gazipasa Antalya

Posted by travelturkey 1 March 2010

Situated 180 km from Antalya, Gazipasa is a charming little town with a beach 10 km long, beautiful forests and turquoise blue coves. Iskele, the site of the Koru and Kahyalar beaches, is an important breeding ground of the caretta caretta turtles. Mostly undeveloped up until the present time, Gazipasa is on its way to being an attractive tourist centre with accommodation, recreation facilities, an airport and yacht harbour still under construction, as well as the natural and historical treasures of the area.

Antiocheia Ad Cragum 18 km east of Gazipasa, and within the village of Guney. These ruins get their name from the Commagene King Antiochus IV, and are found on the three hills that stretch out towards the sea. It has the ruins of a castle dating back to the Roman and Byzantine era, a column-lined boulevard, agora, baths, victory arch, a church and the city necropolis. The barrel-vaulted memorial tombs with their pre-entrance porticoes are well preserved and reflect a style peculiar to the region.

Adanda (Lamos) This ancient city is located 15 km northeast of Gazipasa, and was founded two km north of the present-day village of Adanda, on the top of a high and steep hill. It is a walled city with a large tower south of the city gate, and among the ruins are a fountain carved into the living rock and two temples. Other significant ruins are the tombs in the necropolis made of single pieces of carved stone. These remains are a good representation of the culture and art of the mountainous Cilician region.

Nephelis. This ancient ruin can be reached by going through the village of Muzkent 12 km out on the Gazipasa-Anamur road and taking the gravel road south for about 5 km. The southern area is surrounded by the sea and steep cliffs. The city consists of the acropolis and the remains of dwellings spread out in an east-west fashion. The only standing structures date back to the Roman and Byzantine periods and include a Medieval Castle, a temple, a musical hall, irrigation system and the necropolis.

Selinus Located on the slopes in southwest of Hacimusa Creek by Gazipasa Beach, the ancient city of Selinus is one of the most important cities in the mountainous Cilician region. On the top of the hill is the acropolis as well as the walls and towers of a medieval castle, which are fairly well preserved. In the Acropolis, a church and cistern have survived the ravages of time. The other buildings of Selinus are near the beach and on the slopes, among which are the baths, agora, Islami Yapi (mansion), aqueducts and the necropolis. Most of the bones in the Alanya Museum were brought from the Necropolis and allow the workshop in the museum to exist.

The area has a unique ecosystem which is in danger of vanishing and has the only fir tree grove growing naturally in İstanbul. Other tree species include chestnut, lime, horn-beam and hazelnut.

The Karamanyan

Posted by JillGuest 26 February 2010

The Princes' Islands are a haven of peace and calm just under an hour by ferry from central Istanbul. The Karamanyan is a converted Ottoman mansion on the second largest of the archipelago, Heybeliada. Immaculately styled, with high ceilings and a sweeping original staircase, this place is a real find.

There are four apartments in total. We stayed in the penthouse which doesn't have use of the garden, but the gorgeous views from the pretty wooden balconies more than made up for that. The house is right next door to the former summer house of Ismet Inonu, Turkey's first Prime Minister. It's now a quirky museum. It's also within easy walking distance of the restaurant-lined promenade. Although if you're feeling a little worse for wear after one too many glasses of raki, you'll have to take a fayton (horse-drawn carriage) back up the hill, as motorised transport is outlawed on the Islands.

Polonezkoy

Posted by ironduke74 22 February 2010

Everybody knows Istanbul, its beauty and history. But not many people know about the old Polish village located just inside the city. It is time to discover Polonezkoy where still 1000 Polish people live.

Polonezkoy was founded by Adam Czartoryski in 1842. Polonezkoy was established after the invasion of Poland by its neighbors Austria, Russia and Prussia in 1775. The emigrants from the rebellions in Poland and Hungary and the Crimean War during the years of 1831-1863, have found a reliable environment in Ottoman lands. There were only four inhabitants of the town on the 18th of February 1842, and years later the population increased to hundreds. They took the Turkish citizenship in 1938.

Years later, Polonezkoy became a popular holiday town. The villages hosted many famous visitors, such as Gustave Flaubert in 1850 and the founder of Turkey Mustafa Kemal ATATURK.
Nowadays, Polonezkoy is one of the most famous villages in the world with its geographical state, culture and history. About 1000 Polish people still live there with their own culture. The village is the one and only place in Istanbul that is very close to the city center and it makes the town easy for arrival. The village is very popular especially for weekend activities and attractions. Polonezkoy's club hotels, pensions and restaurants are serving great opportunities for their guests. There are many hotels, pensions, restaurants and garden barbecue places within Polonezkoy.

Haggling in Bodrum

Posted by MsRosie 18 January 2010

Haggling is traditional, expected and enjoyed in Turkey. It ranks as high on my list of holiday activities as sightseeing. If you go into the market and shops to look for souvenirs in Bodrum, you are going to have to play the game!

The most important thing is to decide how much you are prepared to pay for your (fake) watch or (fake) football shirt or (fake) designer perfume. Then let the shopkeeper quote first. Your offer should be much less than you are prepared to pay - as much as 25-50% of the asking price. This will probably be refused and then it's the shopkeeper's turn to bring the price down slightly - then you go in with another offer, slightly more than you first offered and so on - until you come to an agreement.

It could take quite a while and might involve a cup of apple tea ... you might need to walk away without buying anything but be gracious and part on friendly terms - the shopkeeper could begin to run after you and drag you back in and offer you a final price - if it's near enough what you expected to pay, don't let a lira or two get in the way of concluding the deal. Just remember what you were prepared to pay in the first place and more or less stick to it!

We bought a set of bowls for our villa from the market - having agreed a price for one, we then haggled for a set of four - the vendor was absolutely delighted to be doing business again with people with whom he'd already struck a deal a few seconds earlier! We all enjoyed the bartering and we were all happy with the outcome ...
