Castell y Bere is a Welsh castle built by Llewellyn the Great in around 1221. It was besieged by the English in 1283 then later abandoned. It is a fabulous ruin with remains of towers, walls and a barbican. It is like walking back in time when you walk up the path to the castle entrance. The views from the towers are peaceful green hillsides that rise to heights above the castle. It is easily accessible, completely free and often deserted.
Take the Llanegryn turn off the A493 and follow the road to near the end of the valley, Castell y Bere signposted. Entrance free

Right on the seafront, the Penhelig is a small hotel which manages to remain a local pub. There is a cosy bar and pleasant restaurant where the food is good and the prices sensible.
Also excellent beer and wine.
Right on the front at the Machynlleth end of town. 01654 767215 - best to reserve when busy
A small, traditional but attractive cafe. Its speciality is fish and chips and these are splendid. Fresh, hot and cooked to perfection with the fish in very light crispy batter. You are guaranteed a warm welcome from Anna and the cafe's seafront location is a beautiful setting. Don't miss it if you are in the area.
