Beginning at Newcastle Keep and ending 200 miles later at the stunning Edinburgh Castle, the NCN Coast and Castles (South) cycle route allows for the perfect exploration of some of the UK’s finest castles against the backdrop of the beautiful north-east coastline.
Along the route Bamburgh Castle is my favourite. As you turn into the idyllic coastal town of Bamburgh on your faithful two-wheeled steed you will be greeted by the magnificent castle, standing proud aloft the rocky cliffs. The castle's continued grandeur illustrates its past life in great detail making it easy to cast yourself back in time and absorb its history.
Today it is open to the public and has guides and audio tours to enhance your visit. Events and group trips are also hosted.
For those less interested in pedalling their way, the castle is 42 miles from Newcastle and can be accessed by road, bus and rail.

Perched on the Northumberland coastline, Bamburgh Castle has to be one of the most dramatic, beautiful buildings in England. The castle itself is open to visitors to explore the history of the site as well as providing the opportunity to see archaelogical excavations in progress.

However, to experience the true beauty of this place, take a walk along the often deserted beach (coats and scarves are a must!). Looking back to see the castle standing proud above the sand dunes is a breathtaking sight.

And the nearby town of Seahouses offers delicious fish and chips at the end of the day.

In terms of location, you really can't beat Bamburgh Castle. Set in a unique whinstone outcrop elevated above the sea by volcanic activity, it is one of the largest inhabited castles in England. It never fails to amaze both children and adults, with its stunning sea views of the Northumbrian coastline, atmosphere, legends, tales, ghosts and special events.

It is a clean, large white expanse of coast with chunky groups of rock pools, many with names linked to the shape, for example : stag rock, cat rock etc. My two boys aged six and 10 delighted in them and I did think we could spend two weeks here and they would never tire - delightful.

Nearest station , Berwick on Tweed ( from the North) then the local 501 coastal bus - - a lovely journey through all the villages, spying seascapes and countryside.

I do not know about driving, yet I have lots of tips and affordable holiday advice for car less families. ( you know; green, guardian reader type holidays, all acceptable and educational for the kids, whilst full of fun and freedom)

Lovely, well equipped cottages near three miles of beautiful sandy beach, fantastic views of Bamburgh Castle, Lindisfarne Priory and Farne Islands - also amazing old stone tower which sleeps two, called the Ducket - lovely inside - recently renovated - now 5* where you can stay - great views.
