    The Coal Shed

Posted by brightonelle 28 May 2013

The Coal Shed is an absolutely fantastic restaurant which specialises in meat and fish. It's about five minutes from the train station, and seconds from the beach, tucked away from tourists on a private road.
It frequently gets rave reviews, and it's clear why - their delicious menu has something for everyone, from a good old fashioned burger (called "incredible" by Source magazine) to cuttlefish in an ink vinaigrette!
They also have one of the only Josper ovens in the UK, so their steaks are amazing - perfectly cooked and melt-in-the-mouth.
The only downside is that it can get really busy in the evening, but as it's much quieter at lunch, you're far more likely to get a table then.
    Highly recommended!

    La Fourchette Patisserie

    Posted by kris1 21 May 2012

La Fourchette is a charming, very French cafe on the Church Rd in Hove, just off the seafront and a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the promenade. It is comfortable and authentic, with leather chairs plus more formal seating. It serves the most delicious patisserie this side of Paris, beautiful, individual cakes which are simply a delight to behold as well as eat. Large selection of teas and coffees plus 'citron presse'. A nice alternative to the traditional Sussex cream tea

    Hudson and Bridges

    Posted by kris1 21 May 2012

This delightful corner café is off the beaten track, just off the seafront in Kemp Town. It's possibly named after Mr Hudson and Mrs Bridges of Upstairs Downstairs and indeed it has a little 'upstairs' perch complete with vintage decor. The foodie treats greet you as you walk in. Wonderful French macaroons, delicious cakes of all types, tarts, lots for choc-lovers and gluten free slices, all presented beautifully and in full view. Tea is served in pretty china, lots of choice. The interior is welcoming, friendly, little corners to sit and while away time in, they never rush you. Our favourite is a mirrored, kitsch, three sided, silk-cushioned, Fifties-inspired alcove. They open the big long windows at the front in the summer for an alfresco feel, a gem!
Oh and there are lovely fresh savoury offerings too, all home-made and yummy.

Tucked away in Kensington Gardens in the North Laines, The Gardens cafe is quint-essential Brighton. With its quirky artwork throughout, a lovely upstairs balcony looking down on the lanes, and a menu that takes up two whole walls, it is definitely a place you would come back to for its good vibes and comfortable feel.

The food at this place isn't the finest cuisine, but it's location makes up for this. The balcony is a prime people watching spot. You can see right the way along Kensington Gardens which is particularly good on a busy weekend.

    A day out in Brighton

Posted by RFentam 23 October 2008

Start off at Bill's Produce Store on North Road, where you can enjoy colourful platefuls of homemade pizza, quiche and salad in a huge room lined with delicious-looking preserves, pickles and other goodies. You'll be near North Laine now, so go for a post-lunch potter amongst the shops selling anything from vegetarian shoes to kooky sex toys.

If you have any space left after Bill's, a visit to the Bar du Chocolat on Middle Street is a must. Run by the iconic Brighton confectioners Choccywoccydoodah (Duke Street), the hot chocolate is top rate. For one last gastronomic treat, make sure you book a table at Terre a Terre, one of the top vegetarian restaurants in the country, and one of the few to serve up 'haute cuisine' vegetarian food. After all that indulgence, Sunday morning can be a bracing walk along the seafront towards Hove, past the dejected looking West Pier and towards the ice-cream coloured beach huts.

    Bites in Brighton

Posted by Lorenza 23 October 2008

Try Bill's Produce Store for a spot of lunch. It’s ‘the in place’ at the moment but it still feels very genuine. Good prices, friendly service. The North Laines area is also worth a visit particularly for last-minute funky presents. The new library building should also be seen (Carluccio’s café and shop is just around the corner too).

    Shakespeare's Head Pub

    Posted by tintin101 12 May 2008

Shakespeare was to rhyming couplets what this place is to bangers and mash. Mix loads of different sausages (from a fine local butcher in Hove) with as many different types of mash. Good job the bangers and mash is so good because it's the only food they do (aside from a smashing Sunday roast.) Top staff and great music seal the deal. I live in Mexico City now and miss this place massively.

    The Gingerman

Posted by BrightonRockChick 6 July 2006

There are two Gingerman restaurants in Brighton. Both the tiny original in Norfolk Street and the newer one at the stylish Drakes hotel are superb. Excellent, well-thought-out menus, great value fixed price menu, and a great wine list. However, it’s the friendliness of the staff that make both Gingermen truly special. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

    Bill's Produce Store

Posted by pyranha 5 July 2006

Upmarket greengrocers and, more importantly, cafe/restaurant. Some simple and some not-so-simple fare, prepared with the freshest ingredients; and the puddings! They look like they've been designed by an architect and are a meal in themselves. Shared tables and friendly staff mean that this is a place to meet people, eat well and go away with a little treat for later (they do takeaways too).

    Bardsley's fish and chip shop

Posted by pyranha 5 July 2006

Top notch takeaway chippie. It comes into its own, though, when you eat in. The decor is plain, but you have a choice of the freshest fish sourced locally and cooked to perfection. I'd challenge anyone to go away hungry, and they have a BYO policy. So delicious fish washed down with cold beers from the Co-op down the road. Budget heaven!

    The Iron Duke

    Posted by jonco67 7 November 2005

Want a pub filled with chilled out thirtysomethings, with trendy black-clad staff, where more time has been spent describing the food than preparing it and has a wide range of overpriced standard beer? Then don't go to the Iron Duke. Cheap beer, Racing Post-mad landlord, lock-ins, heavy drinkers, lasagne and chips, pool tables, fruit machines, a pint and a fight two pound fifty.
    Not your standard Brighton pub.

    Fish and chips

Posted by SimonHoggart 2 September 2005

You should never bother with English's restaurant which is overpriced and not all that brilliant. The thing to do is go to the Regency and the Melrose, two fish restaurants run by Cypriots just at Regency Square where you can get for about £6 the finest cod and chips you will get anywhere in Britain. But they also do oysters, lobster, plaice and Dover sole, wonderful chips. It's first rate and hard to spend more than £15-20 a head for a feast.
