    The Thekla social

Posted by thatkidfrombemmy 27 January 2008

Someone had a genius idea of making an old boat into a club. The acoustics are great - equipped for both DJs and bands who can pump out their tunes to a resonating effect within the boat's hull. It offers a triple decker sandwich of floors, the top being a bar and (lucky for smokers) a large outside deck complete with heaters! Straight down to the bottom, the hull becomes the main dance floor including a second bar. The selection of bands that play ranges from local to large, alternative to just plain awesome. Thursday is club night, Friday and Saturday if you want the next step up for music!

    The Star & Dove

Posted by johnpaulghetto 16 August 2007

South of the river in Bristol is a bit of a nightlife black hole if you're not in Southville - but with the arrival of the S&D, the Windmill and the Bocabar, things are becoming slightly more exciting.

The S&D wins out over the other two though, because of its fantastic food, some of the best I've had in Bristol (better than many mediocre but far more expensive restaurants in town - Riverstation I'm looking at you).

It's not totally gastro though - downstairs is a more traditional pub, though wonky and trendy in that reclaimed-furniture style. And it's right by a big park. Lovely!

    Seven Stars Pub in Redcliffe

    Posted by smithy7 18 May 2007

It's one of Bristol's oldest pubs with a great history linking it with the abolition of slavery. A small ale house on a cobbled street with old wooden floor and lots of character.

Just off Bristol Bridge in Thomas Lane.

    The Big Banana Juice Bar

Posted by mowtown 8 November 2006

The best juice bar I have ever come across. Top notch fruit juices. None of the extra rubbish you often find in juice bars these days. While I was there, I got talking to John, the guy that runs the place. He knows a load about health and nutrition and his heart is really in the juice. It shows. He told me they were planning to open up a new bar selling fruit juices in the foyer of Carrefour, round the corner near the Galleries. That might be open by now. The prices are low compared to other places that offer fresh fruit juice, I mean properly fresh. I love good fruit juice, I can't wait to get back to Bristol to have another Power Booster. Good on you John.

    Bar Salt

    Posted by tankgirl24 22 August 2006

On the outskirts of the city centre lies a place called Bedminster, within Bedminster there lies a bar called Bar Salt. One of the nicest bars you will find in Bedminster, it has everything from great freshly cooked food, a lovely al fresco beer garden to sit in the sunshine and enjoy your drink and pool tables.

As soon as you walk through the doors you're transported to a relaxed and friendly place where you can chill out alone or with friends. It has an excellent quiz every Monday night, DJ'S on Friday night and Open Mic night every Tuesday (hosted by Ryan Kenning, Ricky Martin and Neil Young - no that's really their names!!) which I have to say is the most fun I've ever had! The standard of local talent that gets up and performs is amazing, from guitars to solo singers with stunning voices, not to be confused with karaoke! All in all an excellent place to go any day of the week!

A bar with the finest selection of whisky in Bristol. Open until 4am on Friday nights and 6am on Saturdays, it has become a place where DJs, late night revellers and insomniacs congregate after everyone else has gone to bed.

    The Star and Garter

Posted by ourmaninbristol 7 August 2006

Legendary late night pub in boho Montpelier. The DJs spin reggae, there's a good selection of rum behind the bar and Jamaican patties for the peckish. If you're lucky you'll find landlord Dutty Ken in a cooking mood and be treated to some of his finest curried goat. Live music every Sunday that ranges from Gypsy Jazz to Latin, Funk and Dub.

    The Rummer Hotel

Posted by ourmaninbristol 4 August 2006

Adjacent to St. Nicholas Market The Rummer has recently been painstakingly restored by two brothers. It's laid-back and a complete antidote to the bland commercialism of many of the city centre chain bars. There's an amazing selection of spirits, including Nicaraguan Flor de Caña rum, a late licence on weekends and an open fire during winter.

    The Coronation Tap

Posted by ourmaninbristol 3 August 2006

If you're in the West Country you've got to have some scrumpy. 'The Corrie Tap' may be small inside but it's worth the fight past students and Bristol City supporters to the bar. The Exhibition cider is reputedly so strong that it can only be served up in half-pint glasses. Gert lush.

    Hillgrove Porter Stores

Posted by ourmaninbristol 22 August 2006

A pub with a phenomenal jukebox hiding away where the Georgian terraces of Kingsdown juxtapose against the high-rise post-war housing of the 1960s. Manu Chao, Motown, jazz, reggae, all await your jukebox selection.
